Kamath recounted an experience from nearly a decade ago when he planted Conocarpus trees at his home, unaware of their ecological implications. He observed that these trees failed to attract local wildlife, stating:
“No birds or animals have ever come to the tree.”
His realization deepened as he learned more about the plant, noting its potential adverse effects on humans as well. This led to a difficult personal decision about removing the trees he had planted years earlier.
“I also realised much later that these trees aren’t good for humans either. They cause allergic reactions in many people. It’s been so many years now that I feel bad about cutting them down, but maybe I should.”
This personal anecdote serves as a cautionary tale, highlighting the need for greater awareness and informed choices when undertaking environmental initiatives. Kamath argues that such oversight can undermine the very goals of restoration.
A Call for Informed Planting Practices
Building on his experience, Nithin Kamath issued a direct plea to the public: to actively intervene when non-native species are being planted. He specifically mentioned eucalyptus and Conocarpus as examples of trees that should be avoided in favor of indigenous varieties.
“So yeah, using native trees is super important. Next time you see someone planting eucalyptus, conocarpus, or similar non-native species, make sure to stop them.”
Kamath underscores that the success of rewilding hinges on ecological compatibility. Using species that are indigenous to a region ensures that they can support local biodiversity, providing food and habitat for native fauna, and are generally better adapted to the local climate and soil conditions.
Introducing Plantwise-India: A Tool for Native Plant Selection
To assist individuals in making the right choices, Kamath highlighted the development of a tool called Plantwise-India. He explained that this initiative, supported by the Rainmatter Foundation through partners like the Nature Conservation Foundation (NCF) and the Environmental Research & Action (ERA), aims to guide users in selecting appropriate native plants.
The tool functions by using a user’s latitude and longitude to suggest native plant options suitable for their specific location. Currently, Plantwise-India’s coverage is limited to the Western Ghats, a region recognized globally for its rich biodiversity.
Kamath expressed his hope that the tool’s reach will expand to other regions, enabling a broader audience to access this crucial information. He believes that empowering people with the knowledge of what is native to their area is a significant step towards more effective and sustainable environmental restoration efforts.
