Alejandro Dayan – Managing Director of Alejandro Dayan Advisory

Alejandro Dayan

Using his long experience of building businesses and understanding their achievements, Alejandro Dayan now assists other organisations to grow and succeed.

What’s your story?

My story is defined by three decades of operating at the intersection of strategy, finance, and human resilience across the world’s most complex environments. Born in Argentina and shaped by a career spanning Germany, Southern Africa, Switzerland and Eastern Europe, I have learned to build businesses that thrive through change.

Today, as an Advisor, I empower a variety of organisations. I realized my most valuable asset is not just business expertise, but the ability to provide the clarity and leadership needed to win in any environment.

What excites you most about your industry?

I am now playing within the Strategic Advisory industry. What excites me is applying the expertise gathered from a 30-year international career; diverse, challenging, and global, to organisations of all shapes, sizes, and industries.

I view advisory as a dynamic partnership, not a sideline activity. I am a hands-on collaborator who supports growth and transformation while remaining a curious learner alongside my clients.

The industry is moving toward this blend of battle-tested wisdom and active engagement, providing the clarity needed to win in any environment.

What drives you in your career to push beyond what other people consider normal?

What drives me is a deep sense of stewardship and the challenge of navigating organizations through transformative change. Having managed complex P&Ls across diverse geographies like Southern Africa and Eastern Europe, my “normal” involves maintaining a steady, long-term vision even when the environment is volatile.

I am motivated by the responsibility of protecting and growing an organization’s future. This drive ensures that as a board member, I provide more than just oversight; I offer the real life insight and strategic clarity required to turn high-pressure challenges into sustainable success.

What have been the most useful skills you have learnt and applied in your journey?

The most vital skills I have learnt are strategic agility and human-centric leadership. In Ukraine, I learned that purely finance is secondary to resilience; keeping operations robust while ensuring employee safety required decisive action under extreme pressure.

Additionally, my ability to inspire and develop talent has been a cornerstone of my success. From creating new teams in the Adriatic to reshaping organizations in Southern Africa and Eastern Europe for greater agility, I have found that empowering the right people is the only way to transform high-stakes challenges into sustainable growth.

What’s the best piece of advice you ever received?

Rather than a single piece of advice, my foundation comes from my upbringing, which taught me to fight for what is right while leading with empathy. This balance has been my “north star” throughout my 30-year career.

In Ukraine, this meant making the difficult, principled decisions required to maintain a robust business while prioritizing the safety and well-being of our 200 employees. By combining this inner drive with a commitment to empowering my teams, I ensure that growth and transformation are always built on a foundation of integrity

Who inspires you?

Nelson Mandela is my most meaningful inspiration. He fought tirelessly for what was right while leading with open arms and deep empathy. He understood how to navigate complex contexts, knowing exactly when his leadership was necessary and remaining determined to transform his country.

This inspiration has fundamentally shaped my behavior, reinforcing my belief that leadership must balance determination with understanding. Throughout my career, whether managing transitions in Southern Africa or leading through crisis in Ukraine, I have strived to mirror this approach: being a decisive, “hands-on” collaborator who fights for organizational integrity while empowering others to achieve collective success.

What have you learnt recently that blew you away?

What blew me away moving from a global corporate career to advising diverse firms is the universality of business challenges. Whether a company is 100 years old or two, the core dynamics are identical: the constant need for transformation, evolution, and resilience.

People often think different industries require different playbooks, but the fundamental truth is the same: success depends on taking care of both business and people. The industry is moving toward this holistic stewardship where the right team is the ultimate competitive advantage.

If you had your time again, what would you do differently?

I truly value every step of my personal and professional journey. If I were to change one thing, it would be to explore different functions and industries even earlier to broaden my perspectives at a younger age.

This is not about regret, but about a lifelong passion for learning. Others can learn that diversity of experience is a superpower; the more environments you navigate, the more agile your leadership becomes.

Today, my advisory work allows me to finally apply this curiosity across multiple sectors, proving it is never too late to evolve and bring fresh vision to the table.

How do you unwind?

To me, unwinding is about shifting focus to find fresh energy. I recharge by spending quality time with my family and my friends. Being active, whether running, skiing, or playing tennis, provides the physical discipline that clears my mind.

I also find deep inspiration in music, reading, and cooking. These moments of “quiet” allow me to process complex challenges and return to my advisory work with renewed clarity.

For a leader, unwinding is not just about rest; it is about maintaining the mental agility and balance necessary to provide steady, thoughtful guidance.

What is a major mindset change, belief shift or ‘ah ha’ moment that you’ve experienced in relation to your career?

The most significant shift for me was the realization that I must take full ownership of my own destiny. While I have always embraced the opportunities presented by a long international career, I learned that true fulfillment comes from believing in a destination and working towards it with joy, intentionality.

This allowed me to transition from following corporate structures to leading on my own terms. By moving at my own pace with clear control, I bring more authentic and energized perspective to my work, proving that passion and hard work, when fueled by personal conviction, create the most impactful results.

Everyone in business should read this book:

I have recently read Walter Isaacson’s biography of Leonardo da Vinci. Living in Florence, I am constantly inspired by Leonardo’s relentless curiosity and his ability to bridge nature, science, and art.

He did not just innovate in isolation; he strategically navigated the networks of his time to ensure he could keep experimenting. Most importantly, he never hid his individuality.

For today’s leaders, the lesson is clear: true value is created at the intersection of diverse disciplines and the courage to remain authentic while fostering a network that supports continuous learning and transformation.

How can people connect with you?
