A diagnosis of sleep apnea provided Alex Kot with a passion for a wellness work/life infrastructure.

What’s your story?

In 2013 I was diagnosed with sleep apnea and cardiovascular disease. Two classmates of mine died of heart attacks in their thirties. These events woke me up to prioritize my health and wellbeing. My passion for wellness has driven me to co-found SLEEEP to promote sleep wellness for everyone, everyday and everywhere. My previous work with the UN has induced in me a love for peace and freedom. From winning an award for creating the SLEEEP module in 2018 we are now striving towards building a flexible life/work wellness infrastructure network that would free us from paying rent.

What excites you most about your industry?

Our industry is real estate wellness technology. It excites me because the real estate industry in general is relatively behind in technology, there are opportunities to innovate and disrupt. There is a growing need for flexible living, co-working & travel arrangements. Covid has accelerated this trend both in terms of desire to reduce fixed expenses (rent) but also the need for a wellness community and mindful living. Our solution is developed to disrupt real estate ownership.


What drives you in business to push beyond what other people consider normal?

My passion for wellbeing, inner peace and freedom drives me in business to tackle all the challenges I am facing, to aim at building a better world. With my positive attitude, problem-solving, no B.S. doer mindset, I work according to a 80% Reality 20% Dream life plan. I am proud to be unorthodox, with self-confidence and the team support and hard data for backup, we can walk through the rough road together.

What have been the most useful skills you have learnt and applied in your journey?

Building trust with others who are better than myself in an area in a short period of time. Given my high empathy & trustworthy personality, I have been able to accumulate a large and strong pool of social capital. That has enabled me to identify partners efficiently and empower others to build this dream together. Our recent hire of a hospitality veteran, Terry Choi, is an example; I would like to transform his health wellness while he transforms our business.

What’s the best piece of advice you ever received?

That I have room for improvement on my ability to focus, to pay full attention at any time. Since then, I have taken a brain coach online course, practiced breathing meditation exercises, made sure my environment has less distraction, listened to music that can help me focus, paid full attention to the present. After these training efforts, I see myself improving in productivity and accuracy. I can accomplish more in one day and the family surrounding me are happier with me being there mentally.

Who inspires you?

My co-founder partner Jun. The constant drive for learning and hunger for self improvement has inspired me to catch up or otherwise I will be left behind and would not be able to catch up with his speed of thought.

What have you learnt recently that blew you away?

I have learnt that my brain works best in the morning between 7am-9am. I now schedule the most challenging work tasks during this timeframe.

If you had your time again, what would you do differently?

I would start my wellness habit 20 years sooner including my exercise routine, diet and attention to sleep wellness.

How do you unwind?

Besides quality and sufficient sleep which I promote and lead by example, I also exercise, listen to music, take a hot shower/bath, cook, and play with my two adorable kids to unwind.

What is a major mindset change, belief shift or ‘ah ha’ moment that you’ve experienced in relation to your business?

Operator mindset changed to an infrastructure B2B solution vendor mindset. We have been operating SLEEEP for 4 years and the edge is that we have been doing product development and testing with both our operation hardware & software system at the same time. Not only have we got proof of B2C market, traction and the loyalty of customers, we gained valuable user (both customers & operators) feedback on our infrastructure system where we have improved along the years and now we are ready for scaling.
