Andrew Tan

Andrew Tan – Director at TrustPro Pte Ltd

An enforced career break led Andrew Tan to learn new skills which are enhancing his career.

What’s your story?

I started my career in the oil and gas industry, working with five multinational corporations across three countries. After facing a non-renewal contract at 40, I pivoted to founding TrustPro Pte Ltd after a short SME journey. This journey involved significant upskilling and adapting to new challenges in the SME sector, where I now help businesses thrive through enterprise resource planning (ERP) implementation and sustainable, innovative business consulting.

What excites you most about your industry?

What excites me most is the potential for innovation and transformation. The ability to implement ERP systems and sustainable, innovative business practices to streamline operations and enhance business efficiency is incredibly rewarding. Seeing tangible improvements in client businesses drives my passion for this industry.

What drives you in your career to push beyond what other people consider normal?

My motivation comes from a desire to continuously learn and adapt. Facing a non-renewal contract and transitioning to a new field required resilience and a commitment to upskilling. This drive to overcome challenges and achieve excellence pushes me to deliver beyond expectations and help businesses succeed.

What have been the most useful skills you have learnt and applied in your journey?

The most useful skills I’ve learned include ERP implementation, strategic planning, and business process optimization. Additionally, building a strong professional network and continuously upskilling in technical and management areas have been crucial. These skills have enabled me to navigate the complexities of both multinational corporations and SMEs successfully.

What’s the best piece of advice you ever received?

“You can do one thing for ten years, or ten things in 1 year. It determines how much you grow.”

Who inspires you?

I am lucky to have a few mentors, such as Mr John Woo and Mr NC Loh. The first gave me the best piece of “advice”, the latter gave me the lifelong learning and upskilling foundation.

What have you learnt recently that blew you away?

A peaceful and contented family is the foundation of an aspiring business.

If you had your time again, what would you do differently?

I will do the same journey. It has been a very colorful life, which I enjoyed tremendously. Seconded to China, Indonesia, and Saudi Arabia and being part of a S$1 Billion dollar project are what dreams are made up of.

How do you unwind?

I do light exercises everyday and maintain a weekly mindful session to clear my thoughts.

What is a major mindset change, belief shift or ‘ah ha’ moment that you’ve experienced in relation to your career?

All the skills that I have picked up through accepting all forms of work, regardless of how meager and annoying it seems, from my previous managers helped me in my current business.

Everyone in business should read this book:

I highly recommend reading the book, “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People”. It is one of the first few books I read once I stepped into the workforce, and its powerful principle is relevant to both employees and business owners. For e.g. The first habit, “Be Proactive,” sets the tone for people to work actively on their situation, which in my opinion, includes having a positive mindset and continuous upskilling. I review this book at least once a year with new insights.
