Architecture is not an obvious path to a nail bar but Arinah Rahid found a route which also combined her love of art and beauty and has led to her creating vegan nail varnishes.
What’s your story?
I’ve spent most of my youth abroad from France to the Far East, and my educational background lies in Architecture.
Despite not having any prior entrepreneurship experience, I’ve made the decision to launch my business during the COVID-19 pandemic. As a firm believer in making beauty, wellness and art accessible to everyone, I was able to open up my first store and conceive my own space to blend the art and fashion scene together.
In the span of one year, I was able to open up two more stores to share more of my dream with the world.
What excites you most about your industry?
What excites me most is that I am creating an environment where people can come to White Pyramid Gallery & Nail Bar to relax while enjoying the creative process involving their nails.
We’re also roping in artists to give them the opportunity and platform to showcase their artwork within our gallery.
I believe this collaboration can help connect the artist with the people creatively.
What drives you in business to push beyond what other people consider normal?
I feel that the term ‘normal’ can be subjective.
We should all endeavour to create our own version of ‘normalcy’.
Personally, I find that my drive for entrepreneurship and pushing to discover new creative ideas that I could bring together comes very naturally to me.
I believe that this drive helps connect me with like-minded people.
What have been the most useful skills you have learnt and applied in your journey?
I find that managing my money, leadership style and taking care of my customers’ needs and wants have been the most valuable skills I’ve learned and applied in my journey.
What’s the best piece of advice you ever received?
The best piece of advice that I’ve received is that there are no shortcuts in life, and we have to work hard to achieve the life and the things we want.
Who inspires you?
Architect Dame Zaha Hadid. She is well-known as Architecture’s “Queen of the curve” for her swooping designs for example London Aquatics Centre and the Galaxy Soho in Beijing.
She is a brilliant and empowering force in the industry that inspires me in my line of work.
What have you learnt recently that blew you away?
Recently I have been learning more about environmental toxicity and started to understand the subject a little deeper. I am also learning about the impact of the human mind and emotions, which I find interesting.
If you had your time again, what would you do differently?
If I had my time again, I would have taken advantage of delving into this business a lot sooner than I did.
How do you unwind?
On a regular basis, I do yoga, it helps bring me a sense of calm, clarity and contentment.
I attend HIIT classes to make me feel stronger so I can take on everyday life challenges. Sometimes I relax by visiting spas and indulging in facial treatments.
What is a major mindset change, belief shift or ‘ah ha’ moment that you’ve experienced in relation to your business?
I spent time studying the impact of chemicals in nail polishes and other materials similar to the impact these would have on food. This inspired me to create White Pyramid Gallery & Nail Bar’s Bespoke line of nail polishes. My learnings and discoveries led me to work on vegan products that possess minimal effects on the wearer.
With that, I am growing a new sector of my business in addition to the nail bars, but in the aspect of growing the product offerings.
Everyone in business should read this book:
I recommend reading ‘Rich Dad Poor Dad’ by author Robert Kiyosaki.
This book taught me how to spend my money on assets and not liabilities. It educates the reader about personal finance education such as cash flow, real estate, investing, and business building.
Shameless plug for your business:
At White Pyramid Gallery and Nail Bar, we ensure that our customers are provided with a holistic experience.
In addition to providing the normal services, we provide an environment to tingle your artistic senses by sharing artwork from great artists all over the world.
We have created a vegan bespoke nail polish range which has been featured in publications such as Lifestyle Collective, and SG Magazine to name a few. We want to ensure that as a sustainable nail bar, we do not have negative impacts on the planet and minimize allergy and non-toxic concerns that individuals may have.
