The realisation that, while undergoing treatment for cancer, her husband felt he was benefitting both physically and psychologically by a particular type of rice led Bably Bhasin to start a business promoting the product.
What’s your story?
My Samezing journey started in the cancer wards. In 2015, my husband, Pankaj Bhasin, was diagnosed with a very aggressive cancer. The life-altering experience with this horrifying disease evoked us to launch Sameza in Singapore.
Our mission: To save millions of lives.
In 2020, Sameza became the First Singaporean company to win The Virtual Shark Tank for its amazing superfood, showcasing health transformations in cancer and diabetic patients. Accredited by Harvard Medical School, winner of numerous international awards, Sameza Vintage Collection is a scientific artisan basmati rice. Previously designed exclusively for royal families, it is now available to the public.
What excites you most about your industry?
Rice is the highest consumed staple for billions of people across the globe, yet it’s the lowest-performing-commodity in the world. In an industry where margins are meagre and volume is the name of the game, most companies are bringing forth low-quality low-performing rice, which is putting peoples’ lives at stake. We are already seeing its shocking results – dramatically rising rates of diabetes, increase in related-chronic diseases – a national problem for many countries.
It’s time to change our mentalities, expectations and choices. Our families, our children definitely deserve higher standards of health and wellness. Now, it’s possible with Sameza.
What drives you in business to push beyond what other people consider normal?
Cancer was a life-changing experience. Cancer doesn’t care about who you are, where you come from or where you want to go. You stand face-to-face with all your realities and they will ask you: stay in the status quo or make changes for a better future?
I live with this wake-up call everyday. My decisions, actions, and mission (in life and Sameza) are based on high-impact future-forward changes that will help me create and contribute to building a better future for millions around me.
Your family is no less important than mine. Your children are no less important than mine.
What have been the most useful skills you have learnt and applied in your journey?
‘Be the game changer’ was the most critical skill I learnt so that Sameza could disrupt the status quo. Every aspect of the brand was consciously crafted to be the Purple Cow. Everything had to be out-of-the-box from the current perception and expectations of rice – product quality, worldwide cuisine versatility, yield ratios, product performance, product education, supply chain, packaging, communications, accessibility, affordability, customer relations, etc.
Sameza wants to impact & inspire families to make powerful healthier choices now in order to leave a legacy of good health for our children. Let’s all rise, why not!
What’s the best piece of advice you ever received?
“Whatever you do, always do it with character and integrity” – Pankaj Bhasin
I choose to do so because this is who I am. This is the quality of life I choose to live with, the dedication I choose to take a stand for, and the quality of inspiration I choose to leave behind.
We are all carving our own legacy. What we leave behind is not what is engraved in stone, but what is woven into the lives of others and the stories they will share about you.
Who inspires you?
I get stoked by visionaries who have the audacity to revolutionise mentalities to make a profound positive impact in people’s lives. They are always ideating solutions that carry the human race forward. That’s the kind of legacy I want to build in Sameza.
I’m inspired by thought leaders like Pankaj Bhasin, Les Brown, Phil Knight, Walt Disney, Simon Sinek, Steve Jobs, Ratan Tata, amongst many others. Each of them have contributed to my mindset evolution, thought processes, intentional choices, and the way I train myself as an impactful influential leader. It also ripples into the way I raise my children.
What have you learnt recently that blew you away?
Gut health = Brain function & behaviour = Mental health = Overall quality of health.
Did you know the biggest part of our immunity sits in the gut? In fact the gut (the second brain) is so powerful that it influences our moods, mental health and the quality of ageing! By restoring health in the microbiome we can now reverse ageing, age-related and cognitive-related diseases. That’s simply incredible! And this is just the start of the next biggest breakthrough after genomics.
If you had your time again, what would you do differently?
Government and health experts buy-in at an earlier stage could have helped in creating a larger & stronger educational awareness in the community. It has been an uphill battle to break into the stereotypical mindset regarding rice consumption on health. There is now scientific evidence that Sameza rice has the lowest glycemic index (53), hence it helps to curb diabetes, obesity and metabolic disorders, amongst many others. We are eager to forge relationships with the community and higher authorities to make this health transforming rice accessible to all.
How do you unwind?
My favourite way to de-stress is spending time with my three little girls. Once they go to bed, the artist in me comes alive. ‘Me-time’ is winding down with creative spillage. I relish the process of going from imagination to making it a reality.
The routine starts by creating a beautiful ambience with music and candles. It stimulates a soothing happy aura, allowing my thoughts to come together and flow authentically. I love discovering my creativity through different mediums and expressions. It could be painting stylised horses, writing poems, working on my upcoming book, reading, ideating, etc.
What is a major mindset change, belief shift or ‘ah ha’ moment that you’ve experienced in relation to your business?
While Pankaj was undergoing cancer treatment, he had to consume high-quality meals to keep his body nourished. Sameza rice was something he would constantly request as it made him feel good. It improved his appetite and helped to decrease toxicity levels. We shared our revelation with fellow patients who noticed the same improvement in their health.
Our aha moment: If this rice could improve the health of cancer patients, when their body is in critical conditions, imagine what it could do for everyone else! This is the exact moment we realised we had something incredible in our hands.
Everyone in business should read this book:
Want to build an iconic, game-changing, ‘movement’ brand?
Read – Shoe Dog: A memoir by the creator of Nike, Phil Knight
Most businesses operate on a finite mindset that focuses on revenue, profits and beating the competition. The rest that lead with an infinite mindset are all about human advancement, innovation and collaboration because they are on a mission with a just cause. Their being comes from a genuine will to make a difference in peoples’ lives.
I strongly believe “mission-aries” make better products, connect with people at a deeper level and garner more respect and trust as a brand.
