In a recent LinkedIn post, Melissa Perri discusses a significant gap in the professional development landscape for product leaders: the scarcity of resources focused on running a product organization from an executive level. Perri argues that while ample material exists on being an individual product manager, the transition to executive leadership is often navigated through improvisation and costly mistakes.
As Melissa Perri highlights the challenge:
“There is an enormous amount of material on how to be a good product manager, and almost nothing on how to run a product organization from the executive seat.”
Perri elaborates that many new product executives are forced to rely on the instincts that propelled them to their current roles – instincts often ill-suited for the broader responsibilities of executive leadership. This reliance, she suggests, leads to a steep learning curve, often involving public failures with tangible consequences.
The Pitfalls of Executive Improvisation
Perri provides stark examples of how this lack of executive-level preparation can derail even talented leaders. She points out that shortcomings in areas like financial stakeholder management, strategic communication, and organizational change are not indicative of poor product judgment but rather a deficit in specific executive skills.
“I’ve watched very talented leaders lose an executive role in eighteen months for reasons that had nothing to do with their product judgment,” Perri writes. “They didn’t know how to build a coalition with the CFO. They walked into a board meeting with a roadmap when the board wanted a strategy. They tried to change how teams worked without changing how the company funded and governed the work.”
According to Perri, these are not character flaws but systemic gaps within the product management profession’s educational offerings.
Addressing the Executive Skill Deficit
To address this critical need, Perri has launched the CPO Accelerator program. This initiative is designed to provide comprehensive training for product executives, covering essential areas such as company-level product strategy, organizational design, funding and governance models, product operations, and executive partnerships.
Perri emphasizes the practical, real-world application of the program’s curriculum. She states:
“Everything is worked through against real situations that participants bring in, because the difficulty at this level is never understanding the concept. It’s applying it inside a specific company with specific politics.”
The CPO Accelerator aims to equip current Chief Product Officers (CPOs) and aspiring VPs of Product with the preparedness Perri herself wished she had during her executive tenure. The program offers live instruction within small cohorts, fostering peer learning among product executives from diverse global backgrounds.
Preparing the Next Generation of Product Leaders
Perri frames the CPO Accelerator as a crucial step in professionalizing product leadership at the highest levels. By focusing on the unique challenges faced by executives – navigating complex organizational dynamics, securing financial backing, and communicating strategy effectively to boards – the program seeks to mitigate the risks associated with on-the-job learning.
Perri’s message is a call to action for both aspiring and current product executives, urging them to seek structured development for the executive seat. She notes the closing date for applications for the upcoming cohort is September 15, with the program commencing in October.
