Cathy Nesbitt environmental beliefs led her to start a worm business but her major focus now is improving people’s lives through laughter.
What’s your story?
I am a Health and Wellness Advocate. Founder of Cathy’s Crawly Composters (est 2002), Cathy’s Sprouters and Cathy’s Laughter Club. I am a multi award-winning environmental innovator who uses workshops and inspirational speaking to motivate people to live a more sustainable life. I am a certified Laughter Yoga Teacher. Appointed Laughter Ambassador in 2017 by Dr. Madan Kataria, founder of Laughter Yoga. Since 2015 I have been leading Laughter sessions at assisted living facilities, corporations, schools, camps and other venues. In June 2020 I started a free online Laughter yoga club because I needed to laugh and connect.
What excites you most about your industry?
We have a global mental health tsunami. Laughter is the fastest happiness hack. Have you ever heard that laughter is the best medicine? It is scientifically proven. Have you had your daily D.O.S.E.? (dopamine, oxytocin, serotonin, endorphins). These are the chemicals our body secretes when we laugh vs cortisol when we are stressed.
There is much opportunity to bring this magic medicine to schools to assist children in learning, corporations to improve employee moral and extended care facilities for a more joyfilled life.
I am excited to assist people to help raise their vibration online and in person.
What drives you in business to push beyond what other people consider normal?
Since adding laughter to my daily health regime, it has helped me to become more resilient, more joyfilled and less stressed. I know the benefit of laughing for the health of it. This drives me to want to educate others on how to raise their vibration, get more energy, connect better and live more joyfully.
I incorporate tapping, brain gym and other healing modalities. Laughter goes with everything.
Ha Ha Laughter is too important to leave to chance.
What have been the most useful skills you have learnt and applied in your journey?
One of the most useful skills I have learned is how to get attention for my business. I chose media as my marketing strategy for my worm business back in 2002 and have garnered over 300 articles, tv, radio and over 100 podcast guest appearances. The ability to quickly and easily communicate my message has lead to many media hits which lead to speaking engagements, workshops and other opportunities.
What’s the best piece of advice you ever received?
My worm business and now laughter business involve speaking and exhibiting, the best advice I ever received was to get branded t-shirts. I always know what I am going to wear and people remember me. Company name on the front, website on the back.
Who inspires you?
I am inspired by ordinary folks doing extraordinary deeds. Dr. Madan Kataria is one such man. Founder of Laughter Yoga in 1995. His goal is World Peace with laughter. It is now a global movement with laughter clubs in over 120 countries.
Tony Hornick, another of my inspirations, created a super simple sprouter to grow sprouts at home, school, work. Sprouts contain fiber, protein, vitamins and minerals. They are hydrating, alkalizing, regenerative and contain up 100 times more digestive enzymes than raw vegetables. Tony is an healthy 93 year old man living on his own.
What have you learnt recently that blew you away?
As a lifelong learner, I am constantly upgrading my skills. I have taken a deep dive into laughter. There is international research about the benefits of practicing laughter to reduce stress, anxiety, depression and elevate feelings of wellbeing.
I am amazed that this simple way to live a better life is not common knowledge. Thank you for the opportunity to share it here.
If you had your time again, what would you do differently?
I would definitely stress less and laugh more.
How do you unwind?
Bike rides, walks in the forest, meditation and of course laughing for the health of it.
What is a major mindset change, belief shift or ‘ah ha’ moment that you’ve experienced in relation to your business?
Since March 2020, I have immersed myself in learning about natural healing practices. There is a summit for everything. The big message is self care.
If we don’t take care of ourselves now, we will need to heal later. Sounds obvious, so why do so many people wait until they are sick before eating better, exercising, etc.
My goal is to stay healthy. I turn 60 this year. I have no health issues, take no prescription drugs, I am vibrant and energetic.
Laughter has given me permission to laugh long, loud, hard and not take myself so seriously.
Everyone in business should read this book:
The Untethered Soul – Michael A. Singer
The Untethered Soul begins by walking you through your relationship with your thoughts and emotions, helping you uncover the source and fluctuations of your inner energy. It then delves into what you can do to free yourself from the habitual thoughts, emotions, and energy patterns that limit your consciousness. Finally, with perfect clarity, this book opens the door to a life lived in the freedom of your innermost being.
