Debbie Fay – Founder of Bespeak Presentation Solutions, LLC.

What’s your story?

I’ve been involved in being on stage and putting others on stage since I could walk and talk. When my children were in grade school I was the founder and director of the school’s talent show. In 2006 I took the leap and began to realize my dream of being a public speaking coach; helping professionals to be heard. Since then I have helped hundreds of people, in all industries and professions, present themselves and their product or service with confidence, conviction and clarity.

What excites you most about your industry?

As a public speaking coach and presentations consultant, there is no end to the thrill I get when I hear from a client who has just walked off a stage or out of a pitch presentation, board presentation or keynote telling me that they NAILED it. They got the standing ovation, won the business, received unanimous approval from the board. MAKES MY DAY.

What drives you in business to push beyond what other people consider normal?

I’m obsessed with making presentations successful. I’ve studied how the brain works when we’re watching and listening to a presentation. I create visuals (PPT slides) for my clients that are synergistic components – not distractions that actually prevent an audience from taking in and understanding their message.

What have been the most useful skills you have learnt and applied in your journey?

Almost all my clients come to me thinking that their presentation problems center around their delivery. This is virtually never the case. 90% of the time the problem with the presentation is the presentation itself; it’s not built with the audience in mind, it’s not been structured in any way, and the visuals are “aids” for the presenter (aka speaker notes) rather than aids for the audience. learning what makes a successful presentation, both content and visuals, has put me above most speaking coaches.

What’s the best piece of advice you ever received?

Do what you love and the money will follow. I am living my dream every day for the past 14+ years. It NEVER feels like work.

Who inspires you?

Many of my clients inspire me. Jennifer Tombaugh and Sharyn Cannon, president and Senior VP of Tauck respectively. Ed Lloyd, former CFO/COO of US Fund for UNICEF. Nicci Take and Alice Felstead, president and COO of m62/vincis – a company I am proud to work with as an associate. My sister, Diane Helbig and my brother, David Roth, inspire me as well.

What have you learnt recently that blew you away?

With the pandemic and presentations being given strictly virtually, I am blown away by how much of what guides my philosophies about successful presentations still holds true. Make it audience focused, give it structure, and make the visuals synergistic aids for the audience = NAILING IT.

If you had your time again, what would you do differently?

I would have started earlier and taken more chances.

How do you unwind?

I love to walk my dog, go for a run, or work in the yard.

What is a major mindset change, belief shift or ‘ah ha’ moment that you’ve experienced in relation to your business?

I had a course correction at the onset of the pandemic. I realized I should be charging more for my services. Realizing my value, experience, and expertise was a (nice) revelation.

Everyone in business should read this book:

My presentation guru is Nicci Take, formerly Nick Oulton. Get your hands on her book, Winning Presentations – or the previous version, Killer Presentations. My sister has an excellent book just out; Succeed Without Selling. I’ll suggest my book as well, “NAIL IT. Create and deliver presentations that connect, compel and convince.”
