Devan Jayakumar – Co-Founder & Country Head of ZoomItNow Malaysia

Moving from the medical sector to logistics is not an obvious step but Devan Jayakumar took it and has gained great satisfaction from the outcome.

What’s your story?

After graduating, I met a fairly successful entrepreneur who was heavily involved in the medical sector. This was my first step towards entrepreneurship as I learnt a lot from him and running a company at such a young age. We grew from strength to strength and scaled beyond Malaysia and into Indonesia where I headed the market. After 15 years in the medical industry I wanted to try something else and I met a few like minded entrepreneurs who identified a gap in the logistic industry and invited me to join them. The rest as they say is history.

What excites you most about your industry?

The logistic industry has a low barrier of entry; what excites me most is that you need to quickly innovate & provide specialized solutions to your clients otherwise you will never be able to scale, especially when you are competing with the age old industry players with huge infrastructures & massive funding.

What drives you in business to push beyond what other people consider normal?

Well firstly all entrepreneurs will say the same thing which is we have to push beyond the normal to ensure the sustainability of the company because if it fails, you will want to tell yourself that I did everything to ensure success. If we don’t strive to push beyond normal then we will lose out to those who do.

What have been the most useful skills you have learnt and applied in your journey?

Listening! During sales pitches people have the misconception that you need to sell sell sell but my approach is to listen and understand the clients needs and pain points before giving  solutions. People don’t like to be sold but the like to buy.

What’s the best piece of advice you ever received?

Its not how hard you fall but how quickly you learn to get up. We are all gonna face multiple failures in life whether it be for business or personal but if you do not have the will to try again that is the recipe for failure.

Who inspires you?

It has to be all front-liners that are helping combat Covid-19. To imagine everyday with no proper rest and the risk they take to ensure public health safety it is so inspiring.

What have you learnt recently that blew you away?

The arrow on your car gas indicator points towards which side your gas tank is located. Now I don’t need to repark my car if I forget which side my gas tank is. Did everyone know that?

If you had your time again, what would you do differently?

I m a firm believer of ‘without failure comes no success’ as we will not learn to grow. In other words, I wish to not change anything as I am happy with where I am and what I have.

How do you unwind?

I am a sports enthusiast especially for football so watching re-runs or highlights on YouTube is something I do after a long day at work. Oh and not to forget Netflix & chill.

What is a major mindset change, belief shift or ‘ah ha’ moment that you’ve experienced in relation to your business?

Client relations is something that technology will never breach. At the end of the day, the client will always want to speak with someone and if we show them that love, they will always be loyal to you.
