Personal financial loss lead Doug Brown to find ways to stem revenue bleeding and he now uses those skill to help others do the same.
What’s your story?
Former professional musician turned business strategist. Spent 12 years military, then built Tony Robbins’ training division from $8M to $27M. Founded 35+ businesses generating $980M+ in sales. Now I help founder-led companies ($10M-$100M) multiply EBITDA by recovering revenue they’ve already paid for but never collected. Think of it as finding money hidden in plain sight—typically $2-5M annually that’s walking out the door unnoticed.
What excites you most about your industry?
Most CEOs chase new revenue while bleeding millions in uncollected money. I love the moment when a founder realizes they don’t need another marketing campaign—they need to plug the leaks. Revenue sits in their CRM, their service delivery, their pricing. When we identify $3M in lost annual revenue in 90 minutes, that’s not consulting magic—that’s mathematical precision applied to human behavior patterns.

What drives you in your career to push beyond what other people consider normal?
I watched myself lose hundreds of thousands chasing shiny objects. That financial devastation became my greatest teacher. Now I’m obsessed with mathematical proof over hope marketing. When I tell a CEO I can 2X their revenue, I show them exactly where their money disappeared and the precise mechanism to recapture it. Truth-seeking beats cheerleading every time. Real numbers, real impact.
What have been the most useful skills you have learnt and applied in your journey?
Pattern recognition across 40 years—seeing what others miss. My musician background taught me to hear what’s off-key in business rhythms. Military training gave me systems thinking. P&G taught consumer psychology. But the killer skill? Translating complex data into executive decisions. I can diagnose 21 EBITDA drivers in 90 minutes because I’ve stripped away everything that doesn’t multiply enterprise value.
What’s the best piece of advice you ever received?
Business is easy until you add people. A mentor told me this decades ago. I see it daily—perfect strategies fail because humans behave unpredictably. But here’s the insight: human behavior follows patterns. Once you map those patterns mathematically, you transform chaos into predictable revenue systems. The advice wasn’t to avoid people—it was to master the human variables driving your numbers.
Who inspires you?
Founders who’ve built something real, survived near-death business experiences, and emerged wiser. The CEO who admits “I don’t know why revenue dropped” inspires me more than the one with all the answers. Vulnerability plus intelligence equals transformation. Also, anyone championing underdogs—because the best opportunities hide where others aren’t looking. Truth-seekers over self-promoters, always.
What have you learnt recently that blew you away?
The average B2B company loses 23-31% of closed revenue to delivery failures, scope creep, and unmonitored discounts. Not theoretical losses—actual contracted revenue that vanishes. CEOs obsess over closing deals while their fulfillment teams give away the farm. When I showed one client their $4.2M annual leak, he went pale. That money funds two exits. It’s already theirs—they just stopped collecting it.
If you had your time again, what would you do differently?
I’d validate before building. I burned 18 months and hundreds of thousands on ideas I loved but nobody wanted. Pride is expensive. I’d also trust my instincts sooner—I knew what worked but sought permission from “experts” who’d never built what I was building. Now? I test fast, fail cheap, and only scale what the market proves it wants.
How do you unwind?
Music still runs through my veins—I’ll lose hours on songwriting or discovering new artists. Theater and dance remind me that performance is about emotional connection, not perfection. Long conversations about literature, biology, anything that makes me think differently. And honestly? Solving business problems relaxes me. Finding a $2M revenue leak feels like completing a complex puzzle. My brain needs challenges, not beaches.
What is a major mindset change, belief shift or ‘ah ha’ moment that you’ve experienced in relation to your career?
Revenue growth doesn’t require more customers—it requires collecting what you’ve already earned. Most consultants sell “more, faster, bigger.” I realized the fortune sits in the gap between what companies close and what they collect. That shift from acquisition to collection transformed everything. Now I help CEOs multiply EBITDA without hiring salespeople, launching campaigns, or chasing new markets. The money’s already there.
Everyone in business should read this book:
Blue Ocean Strategy by W. Chan Kim and Renée Mauborgne. Stop competing in bloody red oceans. Create uncontested market space where competition becomes irrelevant. I’ve built my entire positioning around this—I don’t compete with sales trainers because I’m not one. I multiply EBITDA by recovering lost revenue. Different ocean, different rules, different economics. Game-changing framework.
Shameless plug for your business or career:
I help founder-led companies ($5M-$100M) multiply EBITDA by 2-5X in 12-24 months without adding headcount or marketing spend. My proprietary diagnostic identifies exactly where revenue disappears—typically $2-5M annually in companies already doing $20M+. If you’re thinking about exit value or private equity, we should talk. The money’s already in your system; I just show you where it went.
