Eric Schleien – Founder & CEO of ProxyActivism

What’s your story?

I grew up always curious about how things worked and always curious about the world around me. My parents let me be that way and never try to diminish it through attempting to force me to be interested in something. They always let me explore my own interests and had many as a kid. One of the agreements I had with my parents growing up was that any book I wanted, they would buy for me. That was one area they would spend unlimited amounts of money on me. You could say I got my education through reading a lot.

What excites you most about your industry?

In the investment world: seeing how human behavior doesn’t change with more technology and access to information. There’s always opportunities investing in very under the radar obscure publicly traded securities like what Buffett was doing in the 50s. I also invest and consult a hedge fund in investing in obscure real estate assets as well.

For my proxy battle company: inventing a new way to do something that has been unchanged for almost 100 years.

What drives you in business to push beyond what other people consider normal?

I’m very clear on what the game I’m playing is which is all about expanding freedom on the planet for all people, no one left out. Part of that means I don’t engage in any kind of transactional or commoditized relationships, don’t invest my time in areas that would negatively impact my lifestyle or the lifestyle of someone else. It allows me to say no to almost everything. I’m not stuck in any kind of rat race or hustle which seems to be trendy these days. I keep an extremely low key and focused life.

What have been the most useful skills you have learnt and applied in your journey?

Being grounded in Ontological / Transformational technology has by far been the most useful thing. I’ve gone through Landmark Worldwide’s entire curriculum for living and have also gone through the Tribal Leadership work and have become certified to teach that work which I incorporate into both my consulting firms.

What’s the best piece of advice you ever received?

Never take the position you already know. The moment I take the position I’m now a good investor or I’m now transformed and have done the inner work…all of a sudden that becomes my new identity, my new pretense for life, and it has me avoid taking responsibility for discovering anything new, breaking old conclusions, taking my work deeper.

Who inspires you?

My two biggest inspirations in life are Warren Buffett and Werner Erhard. Both men are geniuses who have a knack for taking abstractions and simplifying them and then sharing them in a way that make it real for others. They are both extraordinary human beings, generous, and deep thinkers who are always learning. They both have no problem going against the crowd, often for long periods of a time, and they both have a knack for taking ideas and principles from unrelated fields and making new connections from that which is the mark of a true genius.

What have you learnt recently that blew you away?

Seeing the relationship between Technological S-Curves, adoption cycles, and how to apply that to modern day value investing. I wrote an entire article about it here:

If you had your time again, what would you do differently?

I would do the Landmark Forum at age 8.

How do you unwind?

There is no how to. As long as I’m living life from my core, whatever there is for me to do is what there is for me to do. I already life a very low key lifestyle so I do a lot of reading, thinking, cuddling with my puppy, and I like to take road trips on a monthly basis. I also love cooking.

What is a major mindset change, belief shift or ‘ah ha’ moment that you’ve experienced in relation to your business?

That I never had to be transactional with anyone and could simply focus on building genuine relationships and creating value for others and let the process unfold naturally without having to push anything.
