Gabriel Wong

Gabriel Wong – Founder of Ascend Marketing

Gabriel Wong was obsessed with advertisements when he was a child, so it is no surprise that he has made marketing his career.

What’s your story?

I struggled with several businesses because I didn’t know how to market them effectively. I then stumbled upon “Direct Response” marketing and started a marketing agency to promote lead generation services because I didn’t have any money left and needed to trade time for money. I used the principles I’ve learned and applied it to social media ads such as Facebook and YouTube.

In five years, we identified some pains in the market and recently started a software that helps service professionals and business owners capture more leads and automate their follow up to sales.

What excites you most about your industry?

I find that what excites me most in the digital marketing industry is how dynamic the environment is and the myriad of opportunities for us to creatively help other business owners spread their vision and their message to the right audiences. Operating within such a competitive industry, I relish the challenge to create advertisements that influence people to make the purchase.

What drives you in business to push beyond what other people consider normal?

My family and I want to be useful and make a difference. I have also had an obsession with advertisements and commercials since I was a kid. I would spend my free time finding good commercials and watching them and observing how I feel and why it makes me feel that way. Sometimes, I take up clients just for the challenge because I find excitement in creating advertisements that influence people to buy something.

What have been the most useful skills you have learnt and applied in your journey?

The ability to sell and influence. Everything is about selling, negotiation and influence.

You use it in selling your product and services. You use it to sell a vision to your team and create a strong culture. You use it to influence people around you to do their best.

What’s the best piece of advice you ever received?

“Good artists copy, Great artists steal”. One of Steve Jobs’s favourite quotes from Picasso.

It simply means nothing is original and everyone is modelling each other. Whenever I want to achieve something hard or impossible, I can find someone who’s done something similar and model them.

Who inspires you?

Jesus. Not to sound overly religious or spiritual. From a marketing standpoint, he created the biggest mass movement and still carries on 2000 years after he died. Over 2 billion out of 7 billion population in the world identify themselves as Christians.

I learnt a lot of marketing principles by studying him. If it’s someone still alive, then it’s probably Tony Robbins.

What have you learnt recently that blew you away?

With medical advancement, our generation could probably live above 120. This means if we’re not 60 yet, we still have a long way to go and lots to do.

If you had your time again, what would you do differently?

Definitely, the way I manage my money. I made some good money in my early 20s but I spent it all on material goods to make myself look like I’ve made it. In the end, I realised no one cared.

The goal is to be rich, not look rich, and take care of the people around you.

How do you unwind?

Spending time with my wife and daughter.

What is a major mindset change, belief shift or ‘ah ha’ moment that you’ve experienced in relation to your business?

Focus on one business instead of multiples. Go deep not wide.

Do not chase shiny objects. Like a new social media platform or NFTs or the next big thing. if it does not have any relation to my business then it’s a distraction.
