In a recent LinkedIn post, Justin Wright discusses the pervasive nature of leadership blind spots and introduces a free tool designed to help leaders identify their own. Wright, who has worked with thousands of leaders, posits that these blind spots often stem from a leader’s greatest strengths when overused. He emphasizes that this is a common challenge, affecting nearly everyone, including himself.

The Origin of Leadership Blind Spots

Wright explains that common leadership strengths, when applied too frequently or without consideration, can inadvertently become detrimental. He provides examples of how this dynamic plays out in practice.

“Fixers solve every problem… so their team stops solving anything themselves.”

As Wright notes, this tendency for ‘Fixers’ to jump in and resolve all issues can prevent team members from developing their own problem-solving capabilities. Similarly, leaders who excessively ‘shield’ their teams from pressure may hinder their team’s ability to build resilience and coping mechanisms.

“Shields absorb all the pressure… so their team never learns to handle pressure themselves.”

Wright points out that there are typically five main types of these leadership blind spots, and many individuals are unaware of their own. This lack of self-awareness can impede effective leadership and team development.

Introducing the Leadership Blind Spot Finder

To address this common issue, Wright has developed a tool called the Leadership Blind Spot Finder. He describes the tool as a concise, anonymous assessment designed for quick self-discovery.

Tool Features and Purpose

The assessment consists of 20 questions and can be completed in approximately three minutes. Wright highlights its accessibility and anonymity, stating that no personal information, not even an email address, is required.

“I built it with Replit. Then used Replit Design to make it look like something I’d be proud to share. The whole process was easier than I expected.”

Wright shares his personal experience with the tool, noting its accuracy in identifying his own blind spot. “When I took the assessment, it confirmed I’m a Fixer. Uncomfortably accurate,” he writes.

He clarifies that the tool’s purpose is not to label individuals but rather to serve as a reflective mechanism, akin to a mirror, prompting self-awareness and potential adjustments in leadership style. Leaders can access the tool at blindspotfinder.replit.app.

A Call to Action and Encouragement

Wright encourages leaders to utilize the tool for personal growth and also extends an invitation to creators and developers. He suggests that if there’s a team need for a tool that doesn’t currently exist, this might be the sign to build it, referencing his own experience using Replit, which offers free trial options.

The post concludes with a request for shares to help other leaders in their network discover their blind spots, underscoring his commitment to fostering leadership development within the professional community.
