Jackie Haley

Jackie Haley – Award-winning Author & Founder

As an experienced author, Jackie Haley is now passing on the benefit of her experience to others.

What’s your story?

I’m an award-winning author that’s been on CBS, NBC among many other major media outlets and traveled the States representing my books. When I started, I knew nothing, I knew no one that could help and I was a nobody. I hired an editor to help, by which she destroyed my work with red ink edits. After two years of revising, I made it better, was offered a publishing contract and was endorsed by the largest newspaper in my state. My passion now is to help people accomplish this goal without the struggles I had on my first book.

What excites you most about your industry?

I’ve had the privilege of working with writers in seven different countries and 15 different states (in the US). It’s the most amazing experience meeting writers around the world and helping them craft and share their amazing stories and message. Many I work with write a book to grow their business and they see their revenue increase substantially after they publish their first book. Seeing others succeed is exciting.

What drives you in your career to push beyond what other people consider normal?

I can be stubborn and I know I’m not the only person in this world that says that. When someone says, “You can’t”, well, I take that as a personal challenge. Writing a book is a challenge for most people, so once they accomplish this goal, they are truly changed. I’ve had clients cry to me once they published because they finally made their dream come true. Making a difference for the better on peoples’ lives drive mes to keep going…that and my stubborn tendencies.

What have been the most useful skills you have learnt and applied in your journey?

I have learned that the book industry is extremely subjective. There are some books out there that are more successful, not because of the content of the book, but because of the marketing strategies that helped them sell. Getting help from experts has been a game-changer in my success. When I have a problem that I can’t solve, I find answers from experts. Case and Point – One of my business coaches stated you need 4 people when starting a business. Get a banker, lawyer, insurance agent and accountant. They help you start the right way.

What’s the best piece of advice you ever received?

Never stop learning. The more you learn, the more value you have to yourself and to others. I am learning from my friends, colleagues, and coaches every day. It helps me see what’s coming in ways of my industry and at home.

Another piece of advice I keep close is a quote from President Abraham Lincoln where he says “The best way to predict the future, is to create it.” I like to think it’s advice to not wait for things to come to you. Go out and live your dream.

Who inspires you?

There are so many people out there that inspire me, but first and foremost, my mother inspires me. She’s been my biggest support my entire life. I’m blessed to have an amazing person that has helped me through so much. I’m also inspired by people that have “beat the odds” and overcame enormous challenges to become the success story they are today. These people help me realize…”Yes, I can” and I keep these people close to me.

What have you learnt recently that blew you away?

I’ve been an author for over 15 years and the publishing and marketing aspect has changed substantially since my first book. For example, Pre-Covid years, the US published 400,000 titles every year. Now, Post-Covid, the US is publishing millions of titles each year. Why? There was an explosion in self-publishing companies. With that change, I knew I had to learn different marketing strategies for authors to help their book stand out among the others. It’s a completely different world now, but I’ve learned to adapt, which is a must-have trait in business.

If you had your time again, what would you do differently?

I wouldn’t take two years to publish my first book. I would have invested in an expert to help me more because it would have brought me success as an author sooner. With that said, I’m grateful I had the challenges, because they were learning moments and things I can share with my clients that are working on their first book.

How do you unwind?

I have an amazing family that I get to spend time with. It’s relaxing to know my two teenaged sons still actually love me…even through their teens. I know other moms can understand that. I love to travel as well and experience different countries and cultures.

What is a major mindset change, belief shift or ‘ah ha’ moment that you’ve experienced in relation to your career?

The biggest mindset shift for me in business is acquiring more patience and adapting to change. There are things that I thought would happen sooner and others where I didn’t know it was coming. For example, I was asked by a client in California to hold a writing class for a university where they served on the board of trustees. This was an unexpected opportunity, but I’m ready to adapt. Keep this in mind as you grow your business.

Everyone in business should read this book:

I’m going to have a book out this year that gives guidance (in today’s industry) on how to write a book. This would be the book I would recommend, so keep watch.

For others around the world, I recommend taking a business leader you admire that has a book and read it. There are so many benefits to learning, especially from those we look up to and trust.
