Jochen Siepmann is a property professional – offering property investments, sales, marketing and education services.
What’s your story?
I am originally from Germany but have been living in Singapore since the mid nineties. After a long career in the banks I turned property professional doing investments, sales, marketing and education (all in the property field). I have been helping my students and clients for many years now and am still enjoying it.
What excites you most about your industry?
I love property for many reasons that include for example it is a fantastic investment, comes in so many different facettes that offer countless opportunities, has made a lot of people wealthy, even provides a home to ourselves or tenants, can be leveraged easily and it is ‘real’ (that’s why they call it ‘real estate’). As long as buyer and seller agree, (almost anything, within the law) goes.
What drives you in business to push beyond what other people consider normal?
If you are ‘normal’ you get ‘normal’ results – if you are ‘good’ you get ‘good’ results and if you are ‘extraordinary’ you get ‘extraordinary’ results.
What have been the most useful skills you have learnt and applied in your journey?
I’d say I have become a pretty negotiator, I can control my mindset and emotions and more recently I think the most important skill I have learned was digital marketing.
What’s the best piece of advice you ever received?
Always do your due diligence.
Too many investors are surprised later on about certain pitfalls that they could and should have checked out BEFORE they made a particular investment and not only find out the hard way AFTER….
Who inspires you?
On the one hand of course successful people like for example Elon Musk or Jeff Bezos, but similarly also those who selflessly give to other, who might quit their job for charity (and are not famous) or just the nurse from the neighbourhood clinic who takes risk herself by helping other people and the compensation is very little. People who give.
What have you learnt recently that blew you away?
It was not recently but a few years ago, but what still amazes me up to this day is how you can (legally, morally and ethically correct and no scam) buy property with little or even no money of your own.
If you had your time again, what would you do differently?
There is no point in regretting. Of course the ‘older you’ is always wiser than the ‘younger you’ was at the time. But at the time it was fine and you can’t change the past, so just accept it for what it is, but can draw lessons for now and the future. For me most importantly make good use of your time, wasted time can never be brought back, even by the richest man on Earth.
How do you unwind?
I used to love travelling and dearly miss it. So now mostly I would relax at home in my garden or on the roof terrace.
What is a major mindset change, belief shift or ‘ah ha’ moment that you’ve experienced in relation to your business?
It’s not ‘Beware what you wish for, it might come true’, but ‘Beware what you wish for, it WILL come true’ – if you believe in it (and of course also work on it), it will happen.
