What excites you most about your industry?
Podcasts, YouTube, commercials, self promotion, webinars, commercials, narrations, storytelling, distinct niches and areas of concentration. Expanding on the needs of consumers through voice over, the voice of an unseen narrator speaking, as in motion picture or television commercials and trailers. Marketing/ Training/ Informational/Anime/Documentaries. Possibilities are endless!
What drives you in business to push beyond what other people consider normal?
With each job I tackle I am honing my abilities and perfecting the talent that will eventually aid me in realizing my life dreams. I focus on personal activities and professional duties that pertain to my ambitions. I feel fulfilled by my successes today and am eager to continue building my perfect future one task at a time. I want to have fun!
What have been the most useful skills you have learnt and applied in your journey?
The most basic types of voiceovers are Commercials and Narrations. Commercials are selling – Narrations are telling. Advertisers realize respond much better to someone they can relate to, someone they can identify with, someone like them! In my industry, this is commonly referred to as the real person read. Real people talk about the products they love – they work on an emotional level and THATS what sells product!
What’s the best piece of advice you ever received?
Be true to yourself.
Know that it is not anyone’s job to make you happy. As I am happy I will attract others to mirror that expression. We live in a world of inclusion, not assertion.
Happy is gorgeous!
Who inspires you?
Esther Hicks, author of the Law of Attraction and other inspiring books. Through the teachings of Abraham I have learned balance, satisfaction direction, fulfillment and found great joy in living and following an inspired path.
Wayne Dyer, Christina Baldwin, my children!
What have you learnt recently that blew you away?
Advances in technology have made voiceovers possible where they were never available before. Because many things are connected wirelessly, voiceovers are now being played at car washes, gas stations, airports, hotels, motels, etc. There are literally millions of applications for VO. Messages on hold, movie trailers, Promo’s, Industrial/corporate navigations, Documentaries, Anime, audio books, E-learning, podcasts and more!
If you had your time again, what would you do differently?
Allow myself to be a beginner.
It is important to prepare yourself for a script for your performance. The script sometimes comes in many different formats and layouts. Sometimes I get directional helps, sometimes I need to effectively develop a character as quickly as possible. Start out slowly. As you gain knowledge and skills, you’ll pick up speed. It’s like baseball. There’s T ball, pee wee, little league, high school, college, the minor leagues, the major leagues, and the world series. It’s a process. It takes time to move from one level to the next.
How do you unwind?
I start each day writing in a book I keep of positive aspects and appreciation. I then move to journaling and then on to meditation. I set intention for each day and write a story from my imagination on how I project the day will go. I find its much better for me to get momentum going in the direction I prefer. I unwind before the day starts! I also enjoy swimming, gardening, reading, studying, and of course, my favorite place to unwind and wind up consecutively is in the studio recording!
What is a major mindset change, belief shift or ‘ah ha’ moment that you’ve experienced in relation to your business?
Having a home studio opened me up to not just the USA VO market, but the whole world! I have found if you are a voice talent these days and you don’t have a home studio, then you will have a very difficult time being successful. I like having the benefit that gives my clients the option of letting me do the work and not having to hire an outside studio. I can get the job done much faster for rush jobs. I schedule my own time. Having my own studio allows me to use the internet effectively!
