Kelvin Ang – Founder & Principal Tutor, The Chemistry Practice

Kelvin Ang

Kelvin Ang’s love of chemistry motivates him to share that love whilst building students’ confidence.

What’s your story?

After graduating with First Class Honours in Pure Chemistry from NUS and serving as an air traffic controller, I taught H2 Chemistry at Serangoon and Anderson JCs and was a Subject Supervisor for A-Level practicals. I eventually founded The Chemistry Practice to create a dedicated space for students to learn Chemistry with depth and confidence. As founder and principal tutor, I design the curriculum, mentor students, and ensure we’re not just preparing them for exams — but helping them truly understand the subject and enjoy the process.

What excites you most about your industry?

The opportunity to make complex concepts accessible and to witness students’ growth in confidence and understanding. It’s rewarding to see students transform their approach to Chemistry and achieve results they once thought unattainable.

What drives you in your career to push beyond what other people consider normal?

A commitment to excellence and a desire to provide students with the best possible support. This includes continuously updating teaching materials, incorporating technology, and offering personalised guidance to meet each student’s needs.

What have been the most useful skills you have learnt and applied in your journey?

Effective communication, adaptability, and the ability to simplify complex information. These skills have been crucial in both teaching and managing the business aspects of The Chemistry Practice.

What’s the best piece of advice you ever received?

To always prioritise the student’s learning experience. This principle guides every decision at The Chemistry Practice, ensuring that our methods and materials serve our students’ best interests.

Who inspires you?

Educators who go above and beyond to make a difference in their students’ lives. Their dedication and innovative approaches to teaching motivate me to improve and adapt continually.

What have you learnt recently that blew you away?

The impact of personalised learning paths on student outcomes. Tailoring lessons to individual needs significantly enhances understanding and retention.

If you had your time again, what would you do differently?

I would have embraced the integration of technology in education earlier. Online platforms have expanded our reach and provided flexible learning options for students.

How do you unwind?

Spending quality time with my family, especially my children, and engaging in activities that allow me to relax and recharge.

What is a major mindset change, belief shift or ‘ah ha’ moment that you’ve experienced in relation to your career?

Realising that success isn’t just about academic results but also about building students’ confidence and fostering a genuine interest in Chemistry.
