Self-described ‘Mr Marketing’, Mark Newsome aims to help small businesses grow by using his marketing techniques.
What’s your story?
I’m a direct response marketing consultant, who stumbled into the consulting angle targeting small business owners and service providers, (typically 50 employees or less).
Simply because a close friend who is a serial entrepreneur pointed out to me how the marketing and promotional strategies I advocated for an entirely different industry would really help your typical struggling Mom & Pop- non franchised business owner or service provider. So I started providing marketing consulting services to them. And I’m glad I did.
What excites you most about your industry?
More and more individuals are either voluntarily or forced into at least trying their hand at entrepreneurship both on or offline as a direct result of COVID or people constantly being downsized or companies folding or physically relocating, either to other parts of the country or relocating to other countries altogether etc. Entrepreneurship is booming.
There is an ever growing need and explosion of previously untapped marketing opportunities of all kinds, from very basic to more advanced non traditional marketing strategies and tactics and non promotional. My skills are definitely needed right now.
What drives you in business to push beyond what other people consider normal?
Let’s all face the brutal reality. The only voices trying to set a narrative of “what” is so called normal are individuals not actually involved in the day to day trenches of any given industry or niche.
As you attempt to serve and service your particular industry or niche at a higher level you quickly realize there are always new and innovative ways to serve your customers or clients at higher and higher levels. And thank goodness serving at a higher level doesn’t automatically mean constantly writing bigger and bigger cheques.
What have been the most useful skills you have learnt and applied in your journey?
To date I would have to say learning or “discovering” how to be or become a better power networker on several different levels has definitely helped me to grow personally as an entrepreneur. No matter what current level of mastery you currently consider yourself at, there are literally tons of others with more reach, more influence, more capital, more expertise and more know how etc.
And some of them (like Callum!) are more than willing to share their proven expertise, proven wisdom and know how and connections with you. Provided you’re open to the potential growth possibilities.
What’s the best piece of advice you ever received?
It’s funny how this one particular piece of incredibly sound advice I was originally taught many years ago has stayed with me. And perhaps the real reason ‘why” I didn’t fully embrace it a whole lot sooner than I definitely should have was because I was rather young and way too stubborn and arrogant, and too willfully ignorant, to totally appreciate both the simplicity and the wisdom of what was being shared.
I was basically taught, “you have two ears and one mouth. And that’s the proven ratio a professional or successful person uses them!”
Who inspires you?
To this day without a doubt the one person who still inspires me the most is my Mom. Even though she grew up incredibly poor and didn’t have access to a whole lot other than two incredibly loving parents, she ended up graduating from college and becoming a school teacher and taught my brothers and sisters to always strive to make the most of what you already have. and not to worry or claim what you think you need, but don’t currently have.
Thanks Mom! Your proven real world advice has served us all incredibly well!
What have you learnt recently that blew you away?
For me personally when I ‘discovered” Tony Robbins recently grossed a billion dollars in one day. This absolutely blew the lid off what’s truly possible.
Obviously accomplishing this incredibly impressive feat didn’t happen overnight or by chance. Every success and temporary failure he and his expert team experienced along the way helped prepare him to accomplish what they did. Right?
So going forward who can possibly deny what is or isn’t possible or practical. It depends or your expertise, creativity and overall commitment and determination.
If you had your time again, what would you do differently?
By and large there are far too many regrets to bore you or your audience with. LOL!
However, in terms of learning or “discovering” how to be or become a far more well rounded human being and successful entrepreneur, given the chance to go back I would have made darn sure I constantly reached out to and got constant direct access to qualified coaches and mentors along every step of my entrepreneurial journey. Doing so would have definitely saved me from a lot of totally avoidable set backs, frustrations and constant struggles!
How do you unwind?
There’s no question when it’s time to take a much needed break I’m either reading a good book or I’m binge -watching on Netflix; it can be a really good comedy, psychological thriller, drama or a popular TV series which is now no longer on network TV. I can just take my time going through it, getting to know the main characters.
What is a major mindset change, belief shift or ‘ah ha’ moment that you’ve experienced in relation to your business?
That’s a great potential growth question. And I think the best and most helpful answer I can give you in order to best serve you is this: Entrepreneurs please don’t ever forget or neglect the fact no matter what your primary business or service is you have or could have a back end income producing component, which can, and will, literally help accelerate your long term gross producing potential. And even though you may not currently be aware of it, rest assured the untapped marketing or promotional opportunities exist.
Everyone in business should read this book:
Be sure you keep some type of ongoing library of positive mind food on hand at all times..
Be sure and grab a copy and read and re-read James Allen’s classic book. “As A Man Thinketh”: even though it was originally published in 1903 his message is as timeless and relevant today as it was when his book was originally published.
