A fortuitous booking for model Nikita Sachdev, at a time when she was becoming disenchanted with the industry, introduced her to bitcoin and she has never looked back.
What’s your story?
After graduating with a chemistry degree, I decided my passion was really in business. My father had been posted to Singapore at the time and I took the opportunity to study abroad. However, I wasn’t eligible for student loans in Singapore so I had to get a job but I couldn’t get a job there then because I was on a student pass and wasn’t eligible. I felt doomed. Until one day, I was scouted in a shopping mall for my natural hair colour to be on a hair dye box for jet black colour. I went for casting, got paid handsomely, paid my tuition and got into the world of commercial modeling. After paying for my business degree, I decided to model full-time as I was doing quite well. I worked for brand’s like Vaseline, Ponds, Lux, Singapore Airlines, and travelled everywhere! My face was everywhere! It was exciting but not mentally challenging enough. So I decided to start a modeling agency, as business was truly my passion. The agency was a success and we represented over 1,000 models and talents in Asia. One day, a client asked us to provide a hostess who could read off a teleprompter for a corporate video. When I got to the shoot, I saw the video was about cryptocurrencies. I asked the CEO what it meant, and all he said was “if you invested $100 in Bitcoin in 2009, today you’d be a millionaire!”. It was early 2017, Bitcoin was at 4-5k. I went home, and started putting my money in Bitcoin blindly. Bitcoin shot up to 19k, and peaked my interest. I started making videos on why Bitcoin was the future of money and blasted them across my social media platforms. Lo and behold, the largest crypto exchange, Huobi exchange, saw one of my videos and I proceeded to become the host on their channel. This got me tons of exposure! I started working with crypto projects as an advisor, started speaking at conferences about blockchain, even spoke at Oxford University! Today, I have worked with over 50 blockchain projects. I’m passionate about this industry and found my calling after being confused and out of place for so long. Today, I run a PR and marketing agency focused on blockchain projects. We have grown very quickly and hope to be a leader in this niche space.
What excites you most about your industry?
The blockchain industry is so new. Every day a new revolution comes out in the industry. When I got into blockchain, I was one of the very few females and people thought it was a “bubble”. Today the largest companies in the world are incorporating blockchain technology. The power of this technology is limitless. It can tackle corruption, bank the unbanked, and give people an identity in countries where they aren’t privileged to have one.
What is your connection to Asia?
I lived, studied and worked in Singapore for ten years. Thanks to this technology hub, I learned about blockchain early on.
Favourite city in Asia for business and why?
Singapore, because it’s so forward-thinking and welcomes innovation.
What’s the best piece of advice you ever received?
To invest in Bitcoin early on but really, it was to not give up when business was tough.
Who inspires you?
My younger sister. She’s a doctor and my business partner. She saw the potential in our business and has stuck by me the entire time.
What have you learnt recently that blew you away?
I learned that the first female prime minister in the world was in Sri Lanka in the 60’s. For some reason I assumed it was either Finland or Sweden. I was inspired to see that emerge from a 3rd world country. But it was inspirational because it showed that nothing is impossible.
If you had your time again, what would you do differently?
Nothing! Success has taught me nothing. Only my failures have.
How do you unwind?
I love F-45 (bootcamp training.)
Favourite Asian destination for relaxation? Why?
I love Thailand and its beaches and laid back lifestyle.
Everyone in business should read this book:
Rich dad, Poor Dad by Robert T. Klyosaki. It really taught me how to work smart, not hard.
