With 30 years of extensive experience, including two decades as a CFO across diverse sectors, I have carved a remarkable career as a finance business leader. Ever since I completed my MBA, I possessed a clear vision of becoming a CFO, driven by the desire to add value and make a significant impact in every organization I serve. Over the years, I have diligently employed my financial expertise and strategic acumen to transform companies, optimize operations, and drive sustainable growth. My journey as a visionary CFO reflects my unwavering commitment to excellence and the pursuit of making a meaningful difference.
What excites you most about your industry?
What excites me most about the finance industry is the opportunity to be analytical and act as a problem solver. As a CFO, I thrive on dissecting complex financial challenges and identifying their root causes. It’s exhilarating to delve into data, analyze trends, and develop strategic solutions that drive tangible results. The dynamic nature of finance keeps me on my toes, constantly seeking innovative approaches to optimize resources and maximize profitability. The satisfaction of delivering impactful solutions and witnessing their positive impact on the organization’s growth is what truly energizes me as a CFO.
What drives you in your career to push beyond what other people consider normal?
I am fueled by an unwavering determination to achieve and produce tangible results. The prospect of challenges excites me, as they provide opportunities to push my limits and prove myself. I am not content with mere mediocrity; I strive to surpass expectations and make a meaningful contribution in everything I undertake. It is this inner drive that propels me forward, enabling me to go above and beyond what others may consider normal. I am relentless in my pursuit of personal and professional growth, constantly seeking new avenues to excel and make a lasting impact.
What have been the most useful skills you have learnt and applied in your journey?
Throughout my journey, several skills have proven incredibly valuable in driving progress and achieving success. Analytical skills have allowed me to dissect complex problems and identify effective solutions. People skills have facilitated effective communication and collaboration, fostering strong relationships with team members. By comprehending the root causes of problems, I have tackled issues at their core, ensuring sustainable solutions. Execution skills have translated plans into tangible results, ensuring timely and efficient project completion. Finally, clear goals have provided a roadmap, aligning efforts and driving focused outcomes.
What’s the best piece of advice you ever received?
The best piece of advice I’ve ever received is that a journey of a thousand miles starts with a single step. It reminds me that even the biggest goals can be achieved by taking small, consistent actions. Similarly, I’ve learned that gold remains valuable regardless of its form, teaching me to appreciate the essence rather than superficial appearances. Another valuable lesson was that a palace isn’t built overnight, emphasizing the importance of patience and perseverance in achieving long-term success. Lastly, decisions should be made based on the available information, as there’s no such thing as a perfect choice.
Who inspires you?
My parents inspire me the most. My mom’s unwavering belief in my potential, emphasizing the value of education and empowering women, fuels my drive. She taught me that I can break barriers and pursue my dreams fearlessly. On the other hand, my dad’s example instills in me the significance of hard work and the role luck plays in success. His determination and resilience encourage me to persist in the face of challenges. Together, their wisdom and guidance form a powerful source of inspiration, shaping my values and propelling me forward on my own path.
What have you learnt recently that blew you away?
Recently, I’ve been blown away by the rapid pace of digitalization and the power of the internet. The world is transforming before our eyes, and the possibilities seem limitless. Concepts like net zero and ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) have also gained significant attention, highlighting the urgency to address pressing global challenges. It’s incredible to witness the interconnectedness of these issues and the potential impact they can have on society. Through it all, I’ve come to realize that change is indeed the only constant in life, and embracing and adapting to it is essential for progress and a better future.
If you had your time again, what would you do differently?
If I had my time again, I would cherish the moments with my family even more, recognizing the priceless value of shared experiences. I would strive to listen attentively, understanding that thoughtful understanding can bridge gaps and foster deeper connections. I would also endeavor to be less swayed by emotions, recognizing the importance of rationality in decision-making. Although I am content and grateful for my life, these adjustments would contribute to making it even more fulfilling and closer to perfection.
How do you unwind?
To unwind, I find solace in reading and traveling. Reading allows me to escape into different worlds, broadening my imagination and granting me a much-needed break from reality. However, traveling, particularly near the sea, offers a unique sense of tranquility. The rhythmic crashing of waves, the gentle sea breeze, and the vastness of the ocean all contribute to a soothing atmosphere that rejuvenates my soul. Exploring new destinations and embracing diverse cultures allows me to find inner peace. Both reading and traveling are my cherished avenues for unwinding and finding harmony within myself.
What is a major mindset change, belief shift or ‘ah ha’ moment that you’ve experienced in relation to your career?
There was a significant “ah ha” moment when I realized that being the right person at the right place at the right time was not just a coincidence, but part of a larger plan. During the Asia Monetary Crisis in 1998, I found myself in a position where I could help save a struggling company. It became clear to me that this opportunity was not solely due to my skills or efforts, but a result of a higher power orchestrating events. This shift in belief has brought me a sense of purpose and trust in the journey of my career.
