COVID and political instability have not blunted Samantha Sin’s passion for teaching yoga, she just turned to technology.
What’s your story?
The last time we spoke, we were just stepping into the 3rd year of our adventure. At the time we had two studios. In mid-2019, we expanded our presence into 5 studio locations across the two brands, just before the social instability swept across Hong Kong. Since then it has been like sailing in storms, one after another, and it has been a challenging but also exciting time for the business. We now have an online yoga learning platform oneyoga-teachertraining.com where we offer different training and short courses.
What excites you most about your industry?
It is definitely one of the toughest business environments that many have experienced. While it is difficult (we were closed for more than 100 days in 2020 and remain closed through 2021 due to lockdown), we also see opportunities. The biggest opportunities usually emerge in the most challenging times. This is what excites us. Because of COVID, people are changing the way they live their lives. Corporates and businesses have to adapt to that. One common theme across industries is the increasing speed of digital transformation. This really excites us and we started moving our business online in early 2020.
What drives you in business to push beyond what other people consider normal?
Business survival and continuity is always the number one priority of a company. For me, in an environment like this the survival instinct is what drives me to the extreme. Our team has a very strong culture of thinking ahead and the drive to strive for excellence. We were one of the first movers in the industry and we are very very conscious of trying to maintain the lead.
What have been the most useful skills you have learnt and applied in your journey?
Over the past two years I believe resilience has been the most valuable thing that I have developed. You have to be very resilient to survive in a business environment where most of the things that affect your business are beyond your control. Resilience is not about not thinking about the challenge you face, or ignoring the problems. It is about getting up again and again after you have been knocked down and still keeping your spirit up.
What’s the best piece of advice you ever received?
Still the same.
“And, when you want something, all the universe conspires in helping you to achieve it.” ― Paulo Coelho, The Alchemist
Who inspires you?
Most recently Ricky Wong – When we started HKTV Mall no one believed that he would eventually succeed or come close to being successful. His business is one of the few that thrived during COVID-19. And now he is already thinking beyond online e-commerce.
What have you learnt recently that blew you away?
If I have to name something it would be technology and how it can transform businesses.
If you had your time again, what would you do differently?
Nothing – never regret any decision you made. Your past is what makes you who you are today.
How do you unwind?
Still Yoga. Meditation helps too.
What is a major mindset change, belief shift or ‘ah ha’ moment that you’ve experienced in relation to your business?
I think for us it is when we decided to move our business online. We started the ground work before COVID. We always had the technology to work from home, to do e-learning etc yet most of us were trapped in the old mindset thinking that these would not work. People used to think that learning yoga online is not possible but now more people start to believe that it is not only possible, but in many ways more effective too.
Everyone in business should read this book:
The Alchemist by Paul Coelho.
