Tariq Syed’s excitement at the development of new computational systems informs his strategic thinking.
What’s your story?
I began in telecoms engineering and moved into digital product leadership, helping shape platforms in AI, public infrastructure, and data systems. Over time, my focus shifted toward solving hard problems at the edge of what’s technically possible. Now, I’m exploring how new forms of computation could redefine performance limits across industries.
What excites you most about your industry?
We’re witnessing the second wave of the computing revolution. What excites me is the idea that, much like Tesla or Turing, we’re designing systems today that will feel like magic tomorrow.
What drives you in your career to push beyond what other people consider normal?
Curiosity and restlessness. I’m driven by the urge to simplify complexity—especially in systems where that simplicity unlocks real-world leverage for teams, industries, or citizens.
What have been the most useful skills you have learnt and applied in your journey?
Translating between deep tech and decision-makers. Knowing how to spot patterns in chaos, align delivery with policy or commercial goals, and ship products that last beyond trends.
What’s the best piece of advice you ever received?
“If it feels too early, you’re probably right on time.” Timing is everything when you work with emerging technology.
Who inspires you?
Nikola Tesla for seeing further than his era allowed. Grace Hopper for translating the abstract into the usable. And anyone who builds foundational tools without needing applause.
What have you learnt recently that blew you away?
That we’re closer than we think to practical use of technologies once thought decades away. That shift from theory to deployment is happening in stealth, and it’s thrilling.
If you had your time again, what would you do differently?
I’d act on instinct sooner. Too often, I waited for perfect conditions. But the real breakthroughs come when you move before the crowd sees what you see.
How do you unwind?
I play squash, hit the gym, and stay hands-on with emerging technologies—it helps me clear my head while staying sharp. I also enjoy reading speculative science and exploring historical innovation stories that remind me how today’s edge becomes tomorrow’s norm.
What is a major mindset change, belief shift or ‘ah ha’ moment that you’ve experienced in relation to your career?
Realising that most innovation isn’t about invention—it’s about timing, framing, and courage. That shift turned me from a builder into a strategist.
