How is AI Writer different from all of the other Artificial Intelligence (AI) writing tools that have been cropping up?
According to Fabian, the whole approach is a bit different because as an end-user, you will get citations. Everything that the AI is writing can be traced back to the original source.
This is the main difference. Most of the other AI writing tools just make stuff up on the fly; they pull all the knowledge from one AI, and the AI just keeps on writing. With his tool, however, you can verify everything that’s written by going to the sources where the information came from. Basically, you can trust what the AI Writer is writing.
This is especially helpful if you’re filing things for journalists for stories.
If you have a perfect article but you can’t check what is written there, can you even use it on a website? In his opinion, you can’t because you’ll never know if it’s true — except when you’re an expert in that domain. However, usually, you don’t need an AI writing tool to write for you if you’re an expert because you can just write it yourself very quickly.
You Don’t Have to Start from Scratch
The only thing that you need to use AI Writer is your headline, the topic that you want to write about.
Then the AI does the same thing that you would as a human if you start writing about a topic that you’re not familiar with — it goes to Google, puts in the topic in the search query, gets the sources, reads up on the topic, then creates an article.
However, the AI Writer can do it a lot more efficiently than you can. It takes the first 100 results and it goes through all this information. Then it tries to get the essence of the topic for you.
So it tries to write a final article that has a lot of research. But it’s far from perfect. What it really does well is that it gives you some kind of brainstorming — it helps you research faster so that you can write about a new topic a lot faster than if you’d go there and read all the articles yourself.
When you give the AI Writer a headline, you’ll get back an article. It’s a very simple process. The article that you’ll get is basically a draft to help you speed up. The main selling point is that you don’t have to start from scratch.
Knowing Intent and Perspective is Key
The AI Writer saves you a lot of time scrolling and becoming a subject matter expert, which is helpful especially if you’re a public relations firm or a career writer.
The question now is, how can this tool help someone get an article with a corporate view on a topic? Because when a company asks someone to write about a topic like the environment or 5G, they actually already have a perspective or attitude about it.
To be honest, Fabian noted that it’s a hard thing to do. If the company has a lot of content published already, however, it can be fed to the AI as the source material. But as he mentioned, the AI writing process starts with a Google search. So if you want to write very favourably about a topic, then you need to adjust the query so it yields the right source materials and writes in the perspective that you intend to.
This is a bit like Googling; it’s an art form. You need to know what the query needs to look like. Though it’s a trial-and-error of sorts, you can still do it pretty fast.
Currently, the AI Writer has a new feature called Keyboard Reports and it’s still in early beta testing. This tool can go out to Google and if you type a topic on the search bar, it provides some suggestions for you so that you’ll know what other people are searching in this field. Then, the tool takes all these suggestions and analyses which content is ranking for these keywords. It also evaluates how hard it will be to rank for this keyword; how much traffic does this keyword generate.
With it, you can analyse all the different subtopics in your domain and see which one you’ll be able to rank in Google and how much traffic you’ll be getting. By examining these, you’ll know what to write about to get the most out of your time — and to get the most traffic.
On Controlling Length
In terms of helping control content length, Fabian also said that it’s quite hard to get right. At the moment, his AI decides itself. For instance, if it finds a lot of information, it writes 1,000 or 1,500 words. That is the maximum because, after that, the quality degrades as there’s not enough information from one search to write more about a topic.
If the AI decides that it didn’t find enough sources to write a lot of texts, it just cuts the content short.
The AI is trained in a specific way to maximise quality. If you train it to write 1,000 words and you suddenly say, “Okay, I just want 500,” it wouldn’t be as simple as cutting the length down. You have to train it to know what is the most important 500 words. Synthesising information is harder than you think.
To ensure quality, Fabian has trained the AI Writer on hundreds of thousands of articles in the past. And this is basically the AI part. The AI learned how to do it and it’s a black box. As a developer, he gave it a lot of information about the sentences, how they’re connected, and how they look.
Though he can’t disclose it, there’s a huge model that learned this task and it’s the AI part — the black box, the magic.
On Avoiding Plagiarism
Plagiarism is a huge issue if you’re using AI to write.
In America, Fabian shared that there’s a so-called Fair Use law and it states that it’s fine to use about 10% of a source. Abiding that, he stated that his AI Writer will never use more than 10% or so from a source.
But, on top of that, everything that his AI is writing is heavily rewritten. There’s nothing that is just copied from anywhere. It’s always written in the AI’s own words. Because there’s a huge focus in the research, there’ll be no plagiarism in the final article.
If you take the content to a plagiarism checker like Copyscape, the tool will only find about 5% of the whole article. Additionally, the AI Writer can also trace back to any source at all. It’s very heavily unique in the end.
To show his trust in what his AI writes — that it doesn’t bring you any problems — Fabian shared that he is using AI-produced articles on his website.
The AI Writer starts very cheaply. At $29 a month, you can get the first package. From that, the pricing basically goes up.
There are people who need thousands of articles every month and they can get a huge package. But the average user only pays on a monthly, subscription basis.
For the $29 subscription, you get 40 articles. This fee is very cheap compared to what you spend on time to write an article yourself. It translates to less than $1 per article, plus it also saves you around 20 to 40% of your time.
Price point-wise, the monthly subscription is very affordable.
Producing Content in Another Language
Currently, the AI Writer is only capable of producing English content. Fabian explained that for this kind of AI to work for various languages, you have to train all the models from scratch again to get into another language.
With English, you already have a big advantage because you have a lot of data, open-source libraries, and models that you can build upon.
He also pointed out that it costs hundreds of thousands of dollars to train models from scratch. Given that the AI Writer is a one-person company, Fabian needs to focus on the biggest market by far. He also mentioned that there are research and open-source models that you can build upon in English that aren’t available in German. So it’s a matter of resources and their allocation.
He shared, however, that he has a lot of customers that use translation tools like Google Translate on top of the articles from AI Writer to get them into their target language. These apps have become pretty good at translating texts.
Being a One-Man Entrepreneur
To get himself noticed as an entrepreneur, Fabian uses SEO. Most of his traffic comes from Google directly. As mentioned, he uses his own AI-written articles. He also uses keyword research. This is basically the main source of how he gets noticed by people who are looking for a solution like his.
His marketing is SEO-focused. If you want to use his AI, you can go to Google, find his AI tool, and try it yourself. He also offers an easy process of getting a trial version to see if the tool works for you.
On Making Shorter Content, Checking Grammar
Unfortunately, however, the AI Writer can’t help people to make shorter posts, snippets, and headlines like what other tools such as Headline Analyser can. He mentioned that there are a lot of other startups that use GPT-3, for instance, and they work quite well for creating short content that his technology can’t offer.
The GPT-3 is an API that everybody can tap into and get their own AI writing app commenced in just a few days.
However, he mentioned that this is a solution that makes stuff up from thin air. And as he said, that’s something that you can’t use on your website because you can never trust it. Also, it makes a lot of stuff that’s just false or incorrect. You need to fact-check your own AI, which is a lot of work.
He emphasised a really good point because there’s an AI writer that I used and the grammar was so shocking that it took me longer to correct it, though it creates a huge volume very quickly.
While Fabian stated that the AI Writer has no grammar checker, it has a model that is trained to write English. It’s the same thing as choosing what information to put into it; there’s a huge black box and he tried his best to train it. He’s still working on it all the time so it’s only getting better and better. But then, in the end, it’s never perfect.
He clarified that this is not the main reason to use an AI writer — to get something out that’s perfect. Instead, it can help you be more effective in perfecting your writing.
In my case, I’ve used his tool to create the first draft of a certain piece of content and do the resource investigation. Then I added in my quotes and localised the content.
What’s the Future Holds for AI Writer
Fabian shared that he’s always working on the models; he wants to make the app better every few months. The AI Writer is the only product that he’s working on and, for him, it’s the one-on-one method that can make it perfect.
In the future, his goal is for users to be able to take content from his tool that they can immediately post on their websites. It’s a hard goal and he admitted that he doesn’t know if it’s achievable.
