What’s your story?
After graduating from Swinburne University of Technology in Australia, with a Bachelor Degree in Interior Design, I worked in some prestigious interior design companies. I spent 18 years in various industries including, the fitting out/construction industry in Hong Kong, and joined various international projects, including commercial & residential projects, like Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corp., one of Japan’s leading banks, Avnet Technology Ltd., a Fortune 500 Company, and China International Capital Corp., One of China’s leading investment banking firms.

I was inspired to start my own practice as co-founder of FK Concept in 2005, so I would have greater control over creative quality and client management.

I’ve been interviewed by major Hong Kong publications such as, “Luxury” and “Hong Kong Business,” highlighting my design company and my views on design. Essentially, our process involves a lot of listening, discussion, and guidance.

What excites you most about your industry?

The sense of achievement that the completed fitting-out work satisfies the client’s needs.
The company started out by providing design and project management services on residential projects. Working closely with residential clients, we learned the importance of working closely with clients and the value of “attention to detail.” Our philosophy was to design and manage the project as if it was our own home. As the business evolved to include both residential and commercial services, we continued to apply that same high level of attention to detail and service.

What is your connection to Asia?
I was born in Hong Kong and I grew up here. I like the unique energy and vibrancy of this city. When I studied abroad, I missed the unique fast-pace and convenient life. When  I moved back and started my career, I learned the importance of a multicultural environment. Combining east and west resulted in more business opportunities, therefore, in 2005, I started my own business in Hong Kong. In the future, we plan to expand the business into other Asian areas.

Favourite city in Asia for business and why?
Hong Kong for sure. We have a best-in-class network of contractors that work closely with the design and project managers, which results in our projects being completed on-time and on-budget, with the high quality workmanship that our clients expect. All of these rely on the competitive spirit and ease of connecting with different sectors in Hong Kong, which allows us to build strong relationships with our local contractors.

What’s the best piece of advice you ever received?
“The difference between something good and something great is attention to detail.”
A good designer should be able to fully understand a client’s needs, strike a balance between creativity and feasibility, and provide the technical support to turn the client’s idea into reality. Once we were asked to redesign and decorate the home of a Hong Kong millionaire. At his request, our team not only accompanied him to France and Italy to choose the furniture of his liking, but also arranged its delivery to Hong Kong in good condition.

Who inspires you?

My Mother. As a single mother who was also a businesswoman she was a huge influence on me. She taught me to be a strong and elegant woman like her. I think she taught me every single good quality I possess. I’m glad that I followed in her steps and started my own business.

What have you just learnt recently that blew you away?

Customers are growing increasingly aware of their competitive options thanks to the Internet.

The trick is to think like a customer. Being transparent, upfront, creative, and always keen to squeeze more value into a project for the customer, has helped us grow, in part, thanks to referral business. We view our success as a result of our client’s success. As a customer-centric service provider, we have to prove our worth in more than just words. Hard work, productivity, creativity, honesty, talent, and vision are what matters and that’s the pledge that has made FK Concept a partner of choice.

If you had your time again, what would you do differently?

To be a teacher in the field of interior design would have been a good choice if I hadn’t started the business. I think teaching is not only a process of imparting legacy information, but also a way to acquire new opinions by sharing experiences with people who are new to this field. The reason I prefer to work with young people is their energy, as well as their fresh perspective.

How do you unwind?
I have two lovely dogs named, “Pound” and “Eighty million.” They are more like family members to me. Spending chill time with them and cooking are my favourite ways to enjoy leisure time.

Favourite Asian destination for relaxation? Why?
Japan and Thailand. In Japan, there are many excellent interior designers from different cultures and business markets which attract me and provide me with inspiration. In Thailand, people are kind, hospitable, and their top ranking customer service and delicious food make it unforgettable.

Everyone in business should read this book:
“The Greatest Salesman in the World,” by Og Mandino, a literary masterpiece on the philosophy of salesmanship.
