Vivian Er – Marketing/Sales Director of Er Interior Private Limited

Joining the family business was a long step from running a cafe, but it is one that has given Vivian Er a great deal of satisfaction.

What’s your story?

My name is Vivian and I represent my family business – ER INTERIOR. We are mainly a carpentry and renovation business. Our company has been in this industry for 20 years and I have been helping out with my family business for 4 years. Before joining my Dad’s company, I ran a dessert cafe with a friend.

What excites you most about your industry?

70% of our projects are commercial and 30% are residential. Hence, it’s interesting to meet and connect with many business owners of different trades.

What drives you in business to push beyond what other people consider normal?

The idea of bringing my family business to the next level drives me to push beyond.

What have been the most useful skills you have learnt and applied in your journey?

Mainly soft skills. Marketing and sale pitch to client.

What’s the best piece of advice you ever received?

To be patient and resilient – from my dad.

Who inspires you?

My Dad. It’s amazing how he managed to build up his company all by himself, grow and sustain it for so many years.

What have you learnt recently that blew you away?

I’m always learning every day but as of now, nothing has blown me away.

If you had your time again, what would you do differently?

Join my dad’s company earlier.

How do you unwind?

The best way to unwind is travelling. If I’m unable to do so, the next best thing would be to find a nice place to have high tea with friends. Occasionally, I also attend media events after work as part of my relaxing regime.

During the pandemic period, I find myself enjoying watching lots of Netflix shows.

What is a major mindset change, belief shift or ‘ah ha’ moment that you’ve experienced in relation to your business?

The plan to expand my family business to overseas may not be as easy as I thought it will be. I learnt to take things one step at a time and believe the opportunity will knock on the door when the time is right.
