I have tried everything from hiring people based on a 2 minute conversation and ‘gut instinct’ to a 6 week 8 person interview process. I’ve done no onboarding and I’ve done extensive 12 week onboarding/training.
Ultimately what I have found is that you really don’t know how anyone is going to perform until they are in your unique environment and culture. Some people will thrive others will fail. Don’t beat your self up about it. Move quickly to remove them if they’re not working and move on. Increasingly I am working with freelancers and if they perform well I make them permanent. Doesn’t work in every case, but is a good opportunity to ‘try before you buy’.
