Early in my career as a CFO, I welcomed an internal audit as an opportunity to strengthen controls across our business. I believed improving was more important than chasing a good rating. What I didn’t fully consider were the consequences if the results were poor. They were. The findings reached our Head Office, difficult conversations followed, and I remember asking myself, “Am I doing the right job?” It was a humbling moment. I learned that every decision has ripple effects on your reputation, your team, and your organization. Since then, I have always tried to think one step ahead, anticipate different outcomes, and prepare for them. That lesson continues to shape both my leadership and how I contribute as an Advisory Board member today.
