Yungyi Su has turned her diverse approach to the fashion industry into a business.
What’s your story?
I am a Taiwanese who established a new type of consultancy studio, Ruleless Studio (RLS), for textiles/fashion industry in Tokyo, Japan in 2019. Our vision is to build up the new OxO(Online mix Offline) textiles/fashion community by sustaining the highly valuable textile manufacturing chain that especially focuses on natural fibres.
#MadeinJapan textiles town (Named Sanchi in Japanese) is the key to keeping a high reputation as the main supplier for the luxury/fashion business over decades. RLS is presenting #MadeinJapan as the new DNA of #ecosystem for designer brand buyers from all the world.
What excites you most about your industry?
Unlike the main textiles industry in recent years, #madeinjapan represents high value, highly creative material for designers and mansion buyers. Most textile’s manufacturers base production base on costings or the economic background. However, thanks to the culture of #craftmanship and although the industry size is getting smaller, Japan has still got the completed sourcing choices and its incredibly special core value, especially with its good reputation for the buyers.
What drives you in business to push beyond what other people consider normal?
Thanks to my career experiences before I decided to start up the company. I thought I was in the wrong business mode but not the wrong industry generally. It is something private, but we are honoured to join the process of making a good product in a very humane way.
What have been the most useful skills you have learnt and applied in your journey?
Knowing the foreign languages/cross-cultural thinking/the curiosity to explore what I felt unsure about using digital tools.
What’s the best piece of advice you ever received?
Do what you think it is worthy even it is something no one knows yet and no one tried before.
Who inspires you?
All people can inspire me just from their different characters. Personally I feel that being open-minded to everyone is the key to helping myself to keep inspired.
What have you learnt recently that blew you away?
Being normal and having a routine lifestyle is a real luxury. Especially during the pandemic, I feel very appreciative of what I have now.
If you had your time again, what would you do differently?
Generally, I like to make decisions with no regrets. I think what I have done is just matching what I should do and can do.
How do you unwind?
Taking a long walk but recently I have enjoyed seeing Tokyo at night on my bike!
What is a major mindset change, belief shift or ‘ah ha’ moment that you’ve experienced in relation to your business?
Recently we have launched acrowdfunding project to introduce the very precious yarn of the Cotton Queen- Suvin Masters Blend in Taiwan.
It is a big challenge because in the past more than 40 years, only Japanese buyers could source this material. Since it is so precious the marketing is also expensive, and I need to keep convincing my team members. I think it is the ‘ah ha’ moment since even those people who dedicate themselves to doing something amazing do not always have sufficient confidence in themselves.
Everyone in business should read this book:
I think everyone has different choices but personally I would just recommend anything that will make you feel inspirationed.
