In a recent LinkedIn post, Nithin Kamath highlights the critical need to raise awareness and improve access to vital government welfare schemes for economically weaker sections, particularly among employees. Kamath, the founder of Zerodha, shared his experience of hosting an enrollment camp at his office, emphasizing that the primary hurdles for these schemes are not their design, but rather a lack of knowledge and accessibility among those who could benefit most.

Addressing Awareness and Access Barriers

Kamath pointed out that many individuals from less privileged backgrounds remain unaware of significant government initiatives designed to provide a safety net. He specifically mentioned the Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana (PMSBY), which offers accident cover for a nominal annual fee, and the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PMJAY), providing substantial health coverage.

“Most people from economically weaker sections aren’t aware of government schemes like PMSBY (₹20/year for ₹2 lakh accident cover) or PMJAY / Ayushman Bharat (₹5 lakh health cover).”

According to Kamath, the effectiveness of these well-designed schemes is significantly hampered by a disconnect in communication and outreach. He suggests that employers play a crucial role in bridging this gap.

The Employer’s Role in Facilitating Access

Kamath shared a practical approach his company took to tackle this issue: inviting Haqdarshak, an organization that assists with government scheme enrollment, to conduct a camp for their support staff. This initiative aimed to remove the typical obstacles individuals face when trying to access these benefits.

“We recently invited Haqdarshak to run an enrollment camp at our office for housekeeping, admin, and security staff. If you employ people, consider doing this. It removes all the usual barriers to enrollment.”

As Nithin Kamath argues, by bringing the enrollment process directly to employees, businesses can significantly simplify access and ensure that their staff are aware of and can utilize these important social security programs. This proactive step, he believes, is essential for fostering a more informed and protected workforce.

A Call for Wider Dissemination

Kamath concluded his post with a broader call to action, urging individuals to spread the word about these schemes within their networks. He underscored the potential impact of even informal dissemination of information, suggesting that everyone knows someone who could benefit from such programs.

“The schemes are well-designed; the real problem is awareness and access. We all will know someone who could benefit. Spread the word where you can.”

In Nithin Kamath’s view, collective awareness and proactive efforts by both employers and individuals are key to ensuring that the benefits of these government schemes reach their intended recipients. His insights serve as a valuable reminder for businesses to consider their role in supporting employee welfare beyond standard compensation and benefits.
