In a recent LinkedIn post, Joseph Valente discusses the journey of building credibility and overcoming skepticism as an entrepreneur, particularly within the education sector. Valente shares his personal experience of being labeled a “fake Guru” when he first entered the online education space, contrasting this perception with his decade of prior experience building substantial businesses.

He highlights that true validation comes not from arguing with critics, but from consistent building and tangible achievements. Valente writes:

“Let the doubters doubt. When I first started out in the education sector, I was labelled as: ‘Just another online fake Guru.’ That was the narrative. That was the easy thing to say. What they didn’t know is that I’d spent a decade building real businesses to a very significant size before I ever taught anything.”

Valente emphasizes that his approach has always been to focus on the substance of his ventures, rather than engaging with detractors. He points to the growth of his education business, which he describes as one of the fastest-growing in the world within a niche he created, as evidence of this strategy’s success.

The Power of Tangible Achievements

A key theme in Valente’s post is the distinction between perceived credibility and genuine, established authority. He contrasts the ease with which perception can be manipulated with the difficulty of faking real-world infrastructure and success.

Valente is set to open what he calls the first university for trades, a 20,000 square foot campus. He asserts the irrefutability of such a physical and accredited institution:

“You ‘Cant fake a university’ You can fake perception. But you can’t fake bricks, staff, accreditation, and a real success stories walking through the doors.”

This tangible manifestation of his vision, according to Valente, serves as undeniable proof of his commitment and the legitimacy of his educational offerings. He stresses that establishing credibility has been paramount, leading him to pursue accreditation and proper procedures even when it meant longer timelines and higher costs.

Enduring Doubt and Staying the Course

Valente extends his message to other entrepreneurs who have faced doubt, mockery, or second-guessing. He frames entrepreneurship as the act of building a vision that is initially understood only by the founder.

According to Valente, the initial lack of understanding or even outright criticism from others is a common part of the entrepreneurial path. He advises perseverance:

“If you’re reading this and you’ve been doubted, laughed at, or second guessed in your career, just remember this: Entrepreneurship is building a vision that, for a long time, only you can see. Most people won’t get it at the start. Some will mock it. Some will hope it doesn’t work. Let them.”

Valente concludes by encouraging those facing skepticism to remain focused on their goals and continue building their ventures, regardless of external negativity. His message is one of resilience, emphasizing that sustained effort and tangible results are the most effective counters to doubt and criticism.
