I’m a storyteller 🙂

In a recent LinkedIn post, Karishma Mehta, founder of Humans of Bombay, shares a profound realization about the nature of high-achieving entrepreneurship: the critical role of strategic breaks in maintaining momentum and fostering creativity. While deeply committed to the “hustle,” Mehta’s reflections highlight a shift in understanding, emphasizing that true productivity often stems from stepping away to allow for recovery and renewed perspective.

The ‘Always On’ Founder’s Dilemma

Mehta, who has dedicated 12 years to her venture, describes a life of being “always on 24/7/365.” She expresses a genuine passion for this demanding pace, stating:

I’ve been working like that since I founded Humans of Bombay 12 years ago… I don’t know any other way to be, but to always be ‘on’ 24/7/365– weekends, holidays, birthdays included. 💻⚡️

This intense dedication, she explains, is energizing. The “chaos of creating something meaningful” fuels her drive. However, a recent New Year’s reflection prompted a deeper insight.

Listening to the Body: A Strategic Imperative

Mehta’s core message revolves around the importance of heeding one’s physical and mental signals. She posits that true leadership involves integrating self-care into the entrepreneurial journey, rather than viewing it as a luxury.

But something I learnt during the last new years: Listening to your body is also part of building.

According to Mehta, actively stepping away from the routine is not a sign of weakness but a deliberate, strategic move. She elaborates on the benefits of such intentional pauses:

The Productivity Paradox of Pausing

Counterintuitively, Mehta found that these periods of rest were profoundly productive. By changing her environment and allowing herself to “get quiet,” her nervous system could “catch up with your ambition.” This shift in pace offered a crucial benefit: a broader perspective.

You get a different perspective as you step away from being too ‘zoomed in.’ When you zoom out, you’re able to think more clearly, you notice ideas you were too busy to hear and MOST importantly: you’re creatively stimulated. 🚀

This renewed clarity and creative stimulation led to a personal breakthrough. Mehta recounts rediscovering her love for writing, separate from the demands of her business:

  • During a break at Sitara Himalaya, she found herself writing for personal enjoyment for the first time in years.
  • This experience reconnected her with the fundamental passion that inspired her to start Humans of Bombay.

This personal rediscovery underscores Mehta’s argument that breaks are not merely downtime but essential components of sustained innovation and entrepreneurial success.

Reframing the Break as Part of the Hustle

Mehta concludes by urging fellow founders to reframe their perception of breaks. Instead of seeing them as an interruption to the hustle, they should be viewed as an integral part of it.

So as a founder who LOVES the hustle… treat a ‘break’ as part of the hustle; it may end up being the productivity hack you didn’t know you needed 🙂

Her insights offer a valuable perspective for entrepreneurs navigating the relentless demands of building a business, suggesting that true long-term success requires a balanced approach that honors both ambition and well-being.
