In a recent LinkedIn post, Jason Feifer shares a personal framework for navigating different life stages, eschewing traditional goal-setting for thematic decades. Feifer, who celebrated his 46th birthday, outlines how assigning a theme to each decade of life has provided him with direction without imposing restrictive paths.

The Power of Thematic Decades

Feifer explains that his approach focuses on overarching themes rather than granular goals. This method, he suggests, allows for flexibility and adaptation as life unfolds. He elaborates on the themes that have guided his own life:

“My 20s were about ‘setting things up’ — career foundations, relationships, figuring out who I even was.

My 30s were about ‘maximizing things’ — career growth, building a family, pushing hard.

My 40s have been about ‘doing things on my own terms’ — freedom, autonomy, saying no to what doesn’t fit.”

As Jason Feifer notes, these themes provide a compass for priorities, preventing individuals from becoming overly constrained by predetermined objectives. This approach contrasts with rigid goal-setting, which can sometimes limit personal evolution.

Avoiding Self-Imposed Limitations

Feifer emphasizes the danger of overly narrow self-definitions, referencing a piece of advice from Malcolm Gladwell. He believes that if we define ourselves too restrictively, we risk missing unexpected avenues for growth and development.

“Self-perceptions are powerfully limiting. I love that — if we too-narrowly define ourselves, we’ll miss all the unexpected opportunities for growth.”

According to Feifer, embracing a broader thematic understanding of a life stage allows for greater openness to emergent opportunities and personal shifts. This perspective encourages a more fluid and less prescriptive view of personal progress.

Looking Ahead: The Next Decade’s Theme

Turning 46, Feifer is contemplating the theme for his next decade. He humorously shares insights from friends in their 50s, who suggest the theme is “no longer giving a crap.” While this offers a lighthearted glimpse into potential future priorities, Feifer remains open to what the coming years will bring.

Feifer encourages his audience to reflect on their own life stages and future aspirations. He poses two key questions:

  • What theme would YOU give your current decade?
  • And what theme do you want for your next one?

This reflective exercise, rooted in Feifer’s thematic decade framework, prompts individuals to consider their priorities and desired direction in a way that prioritizes flexibility and personal autonomy over rigid, predefined goals.
