In a recent LinkedIn post, Matt Gray discusses a common pitfall many professionals face: not a lack of focus, but a deficiency in clear direction. Gray proposes a straightforward goal-setting system designed to bridge the gap between ambitious visions and daily actions.

Gray begins by challenging the notion of a focus problem, stating:

“Most people don’t have a focus problem. They have a direction problem.”

He emphasizes that without a defined target, achieving goals is impossible. To address this, Gray outlines a multi-tiered approach to goal setting, starting with the longest-term vision.

Defining the Long-Term Vision

Gray’s system starts with establishing a 10-year vision. He encourages individuals to dream without self-censorship, asking them to consider where they want to be a decade from now. This high-level view serves as the ultimate destination.

Following this, the framework moves to a 3-year goal. Gray explains the importance of this intermediate step: “Then Your 3-Year Goals. Zoom in. What has to be true in three years for that 10-year vision to still be alive?” This stage helps to break down the monumental 10-year goal into more manageable, yet still significant, milestones.

Bridging the Gap to Immediate Action

The system then narrows the focus further to 1-year goals and, crucially, 90-day objectives. Gray highlights the significance of the 90-day timeframe, noting:

“Ninety days is close enough to feel urgent and long enough to matter.”

This proximity to the present, according to Gray, makes the goals feel actionable and pressing, preventing them from remaining distant aspirations. The process of setting these progressively shorter-term goals effectively “pulls” the distant dream back to the present moment.

The Power of Daily Action

Once the goals are clearly defined across different time horizons, Gray stresses that the most critical phase is execution. He asserts that the “whole trick” lies in having a “big vision, short runway.” However, this vision is useless without consistent action.

Gray advises readers to:

“Wake up. Take a handful of actions every single day that move you closer to those goals. Not busywork. Not motion for the sake of motion.”

He distinguishes between mere activity and purposeful action, emphasizing that these daily efforts must be directly linked to progress towards the established goals. According to Gray, consistent, deliberate action is what makes the overall math of achieving long-term success “unstoppable.” He concludes by encouraging daily engagement with these goal-oriented actions, suggesting that this disciplined approach is the key to turning aspirations into reality.
