In a recent LinkedIn post, Parin Mehta discusses a significant shift in his approach to managing his newsletter, moving from a strategy of adding content to one of deliberate subtraction to cultivate a highly engaged and aligned audience. Mehta frames this evolution as treating the newsletter “like a sculpture rather than a business,” emphasizing a focus on quality and personal resonance over sheer volume.

From Addition to Subtraction: A Sculptor’s Approach

Mehta details his past method of continuously adding more content and attempting to guess audience preferences. This approach, he explains, was less effective than his current strategy. “I used to keep adding more stuff and guess what people want to read,” he writes. “Now I take stuff away and focus only on topics I deeply care about.” This philosophical pivot underscores a commitment to authenticity and personal passion as the driving force behind content creation.

“I’m writing for me and if it attracts like minded people it’s a bonus.”

This statement highlights a core tenet of Mehta’s refined strategy: self-driven creation that serendipitously attracts a like-minded community. By prioritizing his own interests and passion, Mehta believes he is creating more genuine and valuable content, which in turn attracts individuals who share those same interests and values.

Audience Curation for Deeper Alignment

A key element of Mehta’s strategy involves actively curating his subscriber list. He reveals a willingness to remove subscribers who do not appear to engage with the content, a move that has led to a significant reduction in his list size. “Every few weeks I’ll remove subscribers who don’t seem to enjoy it,” Mehta states. “We are down to 8k subscribers from 25k+ I’m sure we will go even lower to 4k subscribers.”

The Value of a Smaller, More Engaged List

Despite the substantial decrease in subscriber numbers, Mehta views this as a positive development. The intentional reduction in list size is designed to ensure that every remaining subscriber is genuinely interested in the topics he covers. “But everyone on the list is interested in the topics I deeply care about,” he emphasizes. This focus on a smaller, highly relevant audience is intended to foster stronger connections and facilitate more meaningful interactions.

“So when they decide to work with me, I know we are already aligned around my core values of curiousity, growth, freedom, simplicity and fun.”

Mehta concludes by articulating the strategic advantage of this curated audience. For him, a smaller, more aligned list means that potential clients or collaborators are already on the same page regarding core values such as curiosity, growth, freedom, simplicity, and fun. This pre-existing alignment, he argues, streamlines potential working relationships and ensures a more cohesive partnership from the outset. Parin Mehta’s approach offers a compelling case study in prioritizing audience quality and personal passion over broad reach in digital content strategy.
