In a recent LinkedIn post, entrepreneur and former doctor Ali Abdaal shares how adopting a “systems strategy” was a pivotal moment in transforming his chaotic approach to content creation and business building into a consistent, high-output engine.

Abdaal, who has built a significant presence as a YouTuber, author, and entrepreneur, detailed his struggles prior to 2019. He described a period of intense personal effort that yielded little consistent progress, largely due to a lack of structured processes.

“Video ideas lived everywhere. Saved on my phone sometimes. Sometimes written in notebooks. I’d get ideas in the shower or while driving but then completely forget about them.”

This disorganization, Abdaal explains, led to significant inefficiencies. He recounted the stress of not knowing what content to produce week-to-week and the difficulty of fitting creative work into fragmented schedules.

The “E-Myth Revisited” and the Systems Unlock

The turning point, according to Abdaal, came in 2019 after reading Michael E. Gerber’s “The E-Myth Revisited.” This book, he states, illuminated the critical error of working *in* his business rather than *on* it.

“The key unlock was adopting the systems strategy,” Abdaal wrote. “I realised I needed a business where results came from systems, not people.”

This realization prompted a fundamental shift in how he and his team managed their workflow. Abdaal detailed the implementation of a Kanban board system to track video production, moving ideas through distinct stages:

  • Idea
  • Writing in Progress
  • Ready to Film
  • Editing in progress
  • Review in Progress
  • Published

Furthermore, his team developed templates designed to enforce a structured approach to content, ensuring key elements like story structure, hooks, and thumbnails were considered before writing even began. The practice of batching filming into dedicated days also replaced the previous ad-hoc method.

Systems as a Catalyst for Creativity

Contrary to a potential concern that systems might stifle creativity, Abdaal found the opposite to be true. He argues that establishing robust systems actually liberated his creative energy.

“And to my surprise – the systems didn’t block creativity, they actually freed it up.”

By removing the cognitive load of constant decision-making about process and logistics, Abdaal found he could focus more intensely on the creative aspects of content development. This systematic approach allowed him to scale his output significantly.

Scaling Multiple Ventures Simultaneously

Abdaal attributes his ability to simultaneously grow his YouTube channel, build multiple businesses, and write a book directly to the implementation of this systems strategy across all his endeavors.

“I implemented the systems strategy in everything I did,” Abdaal stated. “And that’s how I could build multiple businesses, grow the channel, and write a book simultaneously.”

He concluded his post by offering resources, sharing that he has compiled over eight Notion templates used daily for his YouTube channel, available via a provided link for those interested in adopting similar systems.
