“Like Sustainability, AI offers operational opportunities (lower emissions through smart systems, better and faster innovation).”

He elaborated on these risks, pointing to the often-unseen labor within AI value chains, citing the work of the Data Labelers Association in raising awareness. Furthermore, Lingard underscored the environmental impacts stemming from the increasing demand for data centers, which contribute to rising emissions and other ecological concerns.

From Operational Issue to Systemic Risk

A core theme of Lingard’s message was the trajectory of AI from an operational consideration to a systemic risk. He urged the approximately 200 C-suite executives in attendance to look beyond immediate operational concerns and consider the broader societal implications of AI’s rapid advancement.

“But just as climate went from being an operational issue to being a systemic risk, so AI is advancing on the same path.”

According to Lingard, this involves observing global trends such as the concentration of power, the erosion of independent media, and the pressures on civil society. He posed a critical question to the leaders: should these developments be viewed as external factors to adapt to, or as systemic risks demanding a coordinated global response?

Conceptual Frameworks for Understanding AI

To aid in comprehending the multifaceted nature of AI, Lingard introduced several conceptual models. He referenced the “AGI vs Tool AI” framework developed by Anthony Aguirre at the Future of Life Institute (FLI). This distinction helps in categorizing AI’s current capabilities and future potential, differentiating between narrow, tool-like AI and the hypothetical Artificial General Intelligence (AGI).

Additionally, Lingard touched upon the headlines from the Centre for Future Generations (CFG) Advanced AI Scenarios. These scenarios likely explore potential future pathways and their implications, providing a broader context for strategic thinking about AI’s long-term impact on society and business.

Lingard concluded by expressing gratitude for the warm welcome he received back in Montreux, acknowledging numerous individuals for their contributions to the event.
