In a recent LinkedIn post, Kieran Flanagan explores the often-overlooked power of Artificial Intelligence (AI) as a content ideation tool, arguing that its true strength lies not just in creation, but in uncovering unique angles that differentiate content.

Flanagan begins by acknowledging AI’s capability in content creation but quickly pivots to its superior potential in generating ideas. He notes the common pitfalls of AI-generated content, stating:

“Yes, the content it creates has patterns you can easily spot. It’s not that they are ‘slop’. They’re great writing patterns, but now they’re being done at an immense scale.”

However, Flanagan emphasizes that these patterns are not insurmountable limitations. He suggests that the real challenge, and opportunity, lies in how creators leverage AI’s output. He then delves into the more significant impact of AI on content ideation, pointing out a paradox: just as AI can lead to uniform content creation patterns, it can also lead to a convergence of ideas and angles if not used strategically.

The Convergence Problem in AI-Driven Content

According to Flanagan, the widespread use of AI for content generation means many creators are inadvertently converging on similar themes and perspectives. This happens because when prompting AI for ideas on a specific topic, users often receive similar suggestions. Flanagan highlights this convergence:

“Much like AI gives everyone the same patterns when it produces content. It also gives you the same ‘ideas’ and ‘angles’ when you simply prompt it to craft something for you on a particular topic.”

This phenomenon, Flanagan explains, results in a landscape where much of the online content covers nearly identical ideas. He believes this is a critical issue for content creators aiming to stand out.

Uncovering Differentiated Ideas with AI

To combat this convergence, Flanagan reveals his focus on developing AI ‘skills,’ particularly using Claude Code, that are designed for advanced ideation. He shares a specific method he employs:

Finding Inverse Narratives

Flanagan’s favored approach involves using AI to identify the most popular narratives surrounding a topic online. The AI then generates inverse angles to these popular narratives across categories that resonate with a target audience. This process is designed to uncover fresh, less-explored perspectives.

“It finds the most popular narratives online about a current topic – It creates the inverse of these across 6 categories popular with your audience – It rates them and gives you a content brief on the one it thinks is best”

While AI can provide these differentiated ideas and content briefs, Flanagan is quick to point out that the creator’s skill remains paramount. He concludes by stressing that the human element is essential for transforming these AI-generated ideas into truly engaging and impactful content. In Flanagan’s view, AI is an exceptional tool for sourcing unique concepts, but the execution requires significant creator talent and taste.
