In a recent LinkedIn post, Heather Monahan discusses the critical importance of authenticity in building a personal brand, contrasting genuine connection with the performative self often presented in corporate environments and on social media.

Monahan shares her own journey, stating:

“I spent years in corporate America performing a version of myself I thought people wanted to see. Polished. Careful. Safe. Everything changed when I stopped performing and started telling the truth. That’s the version of me people remember and trust.”

The post highlights a growing concern about the homogenization of online content, much of which Monahan suggests is generated by AI and thus lacks a unique voice. She offers a four-step framework for individuals to differentiate their personal brands.

Finding Your Unique Value Proposition

Monahan emphasizes that identifying one’s unique value proposition (UVP) is not a guessing game. She advises professionals to seek external validation from colleagues.

“Most people can’t see their own differentiator; it’s almost always visible to everyone else first,” Heather Monahan notes, underscoring the need for objective feedback in self-assessment.

The Power of Real Stories Over Credentials

According to Monahan, a list of accomplishments is easily forgotten, but a well-told story resonates. She advocates for building a collection of genuine narratives that include mistakes, decisions, and outcomes.

“A list of accomplishments is forgettable. A specific story, with a mistake, a decision, a result, is what people repeat to other people. That’s how a brand actually spreads.”

This approach, she argues, is far more effective for brand building and dissemination than simply listing credentials.

Auditing Content for Authenticity

Monahan proposes a practical audit for content creators. She challenges individuals to review their posts for a week and ask if anyone in their industry could have written them.

Distinguishing Personal Brand from Category Content

If the answer is yes, Monahan contends that the content is merely “category content” and not yet a true personal brand. She posits that specificity is the key differentiator that AI cannot replicate.

“If the answer is yes, it’s not a personal brand yet. It’s category content. Specificity is the only thing AI can’t replicate.”

Leading with Vulnerability and Failure

A central theme in Monahan’s advice is the power of vulnerability. She argues that sharing failures and the struggles leading up to success creates deeper connections with an audience.

“The parts of my story people connect with most were never the wins; they were the fired, the fear, the mess before the outcome. Vulnerability is the differentiator, not a liability,” Heather Monahan writes. She suggests that embracing these often-uncomfortable aspects of one’s journey is what truly sets individuals apart.

Monahan concludes by referencing her “Build Your Bold Brand” training, which aims to guide individuals in constructing a brand around their authentic stories. While live sessions have concluded, she notes that recordings and resources remain available.
