Furthermore, Bradford points out a gender-specific nuance from the research: women may require slightly more sleep than men to achieve the lowest biological age. “Time in bed is not the same as sleep. If it takes 30 minutes to drop off, that’s gone. Wake at 2am and lie there for 20, gone too. Most people overestimate their sleep by 30 to 60 minutes.”

This distinction is crucial, as Bradford argues, because the solution to feeling unrested is rarely about increasing time in bed but rather improving sleep quality and architecture.

Improving Sleep Architecture Over Chasing Hours

Bradford advocates for focusing on the quality of sleep rather than solely on the number of hours. She outlines five key strategies to repair sleep architecture:

  • Maintaining consistent sleep and wake times, even on weekends.
  • Exposing oneself to daylight within an hour of waking.
  • Consuming the last coffee before 2 p.m. and limiting alcohol intake well before bedtime.
  • Ensuring a cool, dark, and quiet sleep environment.
  • Getting out of bed if unable to fall asleep within 20 minutes, engaging in a dull activity, and then returning to bed.

Instead of fixating on tracking hours, Bradford encourages individuals to ask more meaningful questions about their sleep’s effectiveness.

“Do you wake up restored? Can you get through the morning without caffeine holding you upright? Are you sharp when it actually counts?”
