Bill Gates Highlights Progress and Peril in Child Mortality on LinkedIn

Declining Child Deaths: A Historic Achievement

“Over the last 25 years, under-five deaths have fallen faster than any other time in history. This unbelievable progress is due in part to global partnerships, led by Ministers of Health around the world and supported by public-private organizations like Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance.”

As Gates notes, this progress means that “Millions of children who might have died before their fifth birthdays are now living healthy lives thanks to improved vaccine access that protects them from diseases like pneumonia and measles.” This highlights the tangible impact of sustained investment in global health initiatives and vaccine distribution.

A Troubling Reversal and a Call to Action

However, the Microsoft co-founder pivots to a more somber observation: the trend is not uniformly positive. For the first time in a decade, Gates points out, child deaths have begun to rise. He identifies cuts to health aid as a significant contributing factor to this worrying reversal.

“But progress isn’t inevitable. For the first time in a decade, child deaths have been rising, driven in part by cuts to health aid.”
