In a recent LinkedIn post, Sachin Rekhi discusses the significant organizational restructuring announced by Zeb Evans, the Founder & CEO of ClickUp, aimed at navigating the evolving landscape shaped by artificial intelligence. Rekhi highlights the creation of four key roles designed to foster survival and growth in this new era.

Redefining Engineering and Product Roles in the Age of AI

Rekhi elaborates on how traditional roles are being reimagined. The concept of ’10X Engineers’ is evolving, as Rekhi explains, to focus on direction rather than direct coding.

“The great engineers, the ones who can orchestrate, architect, and review, are becoming 100x engineers. They’re not writing code. They’re directing agents that write code. The skill is judgment.”

This shift, according to Rekhi’s analysis of Evans’ post, emphasizes higher-level strategic thinking and oversight. Similarly, product management and design functions are converging. As Rekhi notes, “Product management and design roles are merging. Designers that have customer focus, become more like product managers. And product managers that have intuition for UX become more like designers.” He further points out that these redefined product managers are engaging with code, not for production, but for rapid iteration and validation.

Introducing Agent Managers and Front-Liners

Beyond engineering and product, Rekhi details two other crucial new roles. The ‘Agent Managers’ are those who can successfully automate their traditional job functions using AI systems. According to Rekhi, these individuals are key to removing operational bottlenecks, thereby enabling the enhanced productivity of 10X Engineers and 10X Product Managers.

“Those that can automate their traditional job away into AI systems become the agent managers. These agent managers are critical for removing all the bottlenecks preventing 10x engineers and 10x product managers from iterating fast.”

The final role highlighted by Rekhi is the ‘Front-Liner.’ In Evans’ vision, direct customer interaction time is paramount and should not be automated. Rekhi shares Evans’ perspective that the systems supporting these front-liners should be automated, allowing them to dedicate almost all their time to customer engagement.

“One-on-one meeting time with customers is something that shouldn’t be automated. The systems around the meetings should be – so that front-liners spend nearly 100% of their time with customers.”

Incentivizing High Performance Through Restructuring

Rekhi also sheds light on the financial and structural implications of this transformation. To incentivize these newly defined roles, Evans is reportedly introducing substantial compensation packages. As Rekhi explains, “Zeb is introducing million dollar pay packages for the most productive individuals in each role.” To fund these high-performance incentives, Rekhi notes that Evans made the difficult decision to lay off 22% of the organization, reallocating those salary resources to top performers in the new roles.

In summary, Sachin Rekhi’s analysis of Zeb Evans’ LinkedIn post provides a clear breakdown of a bold corporate strategy. It illustrates how ClickUp is attempting to adapt to the AI era by restructuring its workforce around specialized, high-impact roles and incentivizing top talent, even at the cost of significant workforce reduction. Rekhi frames this as a strategic move for survival and thriving in the age of AI.
