In a recent LinkedIn post, Lise Kuecker discusses the inherent tension between unique business approaches and the judgment they often attract, ultimately arguing that individuality is key to achieving results. Kuecker, who has experience building and exiting six businesses, shared her perspective on navigating criticism and staying true to one’s vision.
She begins by acknowledging the inevitable scrutiny that comes with building something new. According to Kuecker, this judgment often stems from others’ desire to be part of eventual success, or simply from differing opinions on the ‘normal path’ of business development.
“What makes you different will cause judgment. But it’ll also get you results.”
Kuecker recounts her own early experiences, where her focus on building teams that could operate independently and maintaining a clear exit plan was met with skepticism. She emphasizes the importance of discerning genuine feedback from mere criticism.
Separating Criticism from Constructive Feedback
A core tenet of Kuecker’s message is the idea that most criticism is not a reflection of the business owner or their venture, but rather of the critic themselves. She posits that individuals who consistently put others down are often dealing with their own internal struggles.
“Most criticism isn’t a reflection of you or your business. It’s a reflection of the person saying it,” Kuecker writes. This perspective encourages founders to detach their self-worth from external negative opinions.
Conversely, Kuecker identifies genuine advice as coming from those who have navigated similar paths and wish to help others avoid pitfalls. These are the individuals, she suggests, that entrepreneurs should actively seek out and listen to.
Respecting Differences in Business Building
Even among peers and friends, Kuecker notes that disagreements on business decisions are common. However, she advocates for mutual respect in these situations, recognizing that different individuals will build different businesses in their own unique ways.
“To this day, there are some decisions that my friends and other entrepreneurs won’t agree with. And they make business decisions that don’t align with me. We still respect that we’re different people building different businesses.”
Kuecker reinforces the idea that no one can operate a business exactly like its founder. The founder’s unique methods, while potentially making some uncomfortable, are valid as long as they align with the founder’s goals and lead to desired outcomes.
The Value of an Unwavering Approach
The entrepreneur highlights that deviating from conventional methods is often necessary for innovation and personal business success. The key, as she sees it, is internal validation – ensuring that the chosen path works for the individual and their business objectives.
“As long as it works for you, that’s all that matters.”
Kuecker concludes by posing a question to her audience: “What’s one thing about your business you wouldn’t change for anything?” This invites reflection on the non-negotiable aspects of their entrepreneurial journey.
