In a recent LinkedIn post, Aaron Reeves highlights four key traits he has observed in high-earning Account Executives (AEs) who consistently make $250,000 annually. Reeves, who attributes his own success as a top AE at age 21 to many of these characteristics, breaks down the essential qualities that distinguish top performers in sales.

Deep Domain Expertise as a Differentiator

Reeves emphasizes the importance of specialized knowledge within a specific industry or sub-vertical. He notes that top AEs often commit to a single area for extended periods, typically five years or more. This sustained focus allows them to develop a profound understanding of industry nuances, key performance indicators (KPIs), and subtle details that less experienced sellers might overlook. This deep expertise, according to Reeves, often becomes a critical advantage.

“Instead of hopping between industries, they often stay within a vertical and often a sub-vertical for at least 5 years at a time. They pick up on all the nuances, the KPIs, and the little things that newer sellers may miss.”

This specialized knowledge, as Reeves points out, is not always immediately apparent but serves as a significant differentiator, setting these AEs apart from their peers.

Proactive Pipeline Generation

A second crucial trait identified by Reeves is the ability to self-source pipeline. He observes that virtually every top-performing AE he has encountered actively books their own meetings, rather than solely relying on Sales Development Representatives (SDRs) or marketing-generated leads. While many AEs might source about 20% of their pipeline independently, Reeves states that top performers actively dislike dependency on others for leads.

Aaron Reeves argues that these individuals employ a more strategic approach to outreach, focusing on thoughtful messaging to penetrate large, net-new accounts. This method, he suggests, enables them to consistently surpass their sales targets.

“Every single rep I’ve talked to books their own meetings. The majority of AEs self-source about 20% of their pipeline, and 80% comes from SDRs on marketing, but every top AE I’ve spoken to hates relying on that.”

Mastery of Diverse Sales Methodologies

Reeves introduces a less commonly discussed, yet vital, characteristic: the mastery of multiple sales styles. He highlights that top AEs understand the distinct approaches required for both transactional and consultative selling. Selling a lower-value inbound deal differs significantly from closing a high-value, complex outbound contract. As Reeves explains, these leading professionals can adapt their strategy fluidly.

According to Reeves, the ability to discern and apply the appropriate sales style for the specific deal context is key to achieving optimal outcomes.

The Commitment to Going the Extra Mile

Finally, Reeves points to a willingness to consistently exceed expectations. He notes that these top AEs are prepared to undertake additional efforts without being asked, whether it involves in-person client visits, prospecting after standard work hours, or updating their sales pipeline on a weekend morning. This dedication to going above and beyond is, in Reeves’s view, fundamental to achieving sustained success.

“All of them do the extra thing for the sake of doing it, whether that’s getting on site, prospecting a few hours after work, or updating the pipeline on a Sunday morning. They’re always willing to go the extra mile to set themselves up for real success.”

Reeves concludes by reiterating that achieving top-tier performance as an Account Executive is challenging, but clear patterns emerge when observing the most successful individuals in the field. He invites further discussion on what others perceive as the most critical trait for success.
