In a recent LinkedIn post, Ehsan Ali Au shares a deeply personal account of his transition from a corporate career to becoming a successful career coach, highlighting a pivotal question that redefined his professional trajectory. Au begins by detailing his decision to leave corporate life during the COVID-19 pandemic, driven by a frustration with external limitations on his professional development.

He writes:

During COVID, I quit corporate. I didn’t have it all figured out. Far from it. I quit because I was tired of waiting for someone else to decide my ceiling. My growth. My income. My projects. My clients. My future.

Au recounts the disillusionment of being offered roles that felt like a step backward, describing corporate life as having become a “ceiling.” This led him to try his hand at three different businesses within 18 months, all of which ultimately failed, leaving his finances depleted and his confidence shaken.

The Turning Point: Seeking Guidance and a New Perspective

Faced with these setbacks, Ehsan Ali Au sought the help of a business coach. This decision proved instrumental. The coach encouraged Au to list all his business ideas, with career coaching appearing at the bottom. However, by examining Au’s extensive background—which included teaching from a young age, instructing in an engineering college, and over two decades in corporate IT, all involving elements of teaching, coaching, and mentoring—the coach identified a natural talent and passion that Au himself had overlooked.

As Au notes:

Always teaching, coaching, mentoring. Helping people see what they couldn’t see in themselves. It came naturally to me. I loved doing it. It never felt like work. He said: “This is what you should do.”

Despite this revelation, Au admits to experiencing significant doubt in the initial months of his career coaching venture, particularly with ongoing financial responsibilities like a mortgage and family to support. This uncertainty led him to consider returning to the corporate world for familiar roles, a prospect that felt like a significant personal failure.

Shifting the Question, Redefining the Future

The critical shift, Au explains, occurred when he stopped asking, “How do I get back to what I had?” and instead posed a fundamentally different question: “What would it take to get to $400K+?” This reframing prompted a deep dive into high-paying roles, the companies that offered them, and the specific problems these positions aimed to solve. It involved proactive engagement rather than passive waiting.

Au elaborates on this strategic pivot:

I researched the companies paying at that level. The roles. The people inside those companies. The problems they were trying to solve. No job board. No public posting. No waiting for permission.

This new approach led to direct conversations about opportunities in the $400K+ range, presenting Au with a choice: accept a high-paying corporate role or leverage his experience to guide others. He chose the latter, dedicating himself to helping professionals overcome their own career ceilings.

Impact and a System for Breakthroughs

Since then, Ehsan Ali Au has coached over 150 senior individuals one-on-one and assisted thousands more through workshops and group sessions. His work has empowered senior IT professionals to secure roles paying $250K, $300K, and $400K+, often involving significant career level jumps that they previously deemed unattainable. Au attributes these breakthroughs directly to the power of asking a more ambitious question.

He concludes by emphasizing the broader applicability of his experience:

All because one question changed my trajectory. “What would it take to get to $400K+?” That question can change yours too.

Au is offering a live, four-session program from June 6 to June 18 to cover his complete system for professionals seeking to break through their own career limitations. He invites interested individuals to DM him the keyword “SHIFT” for more details.
