In a recent LinkedIn post, Ani Filipova shares a deeply personal account of overcoming a lifelong fear of speaking in professional settings, arguing that finding one’s voice is crucial for career advancement.

Filipova recounts how her upbringing in socialist Bulgaria instilled survival rules that were counterproductive in a corporate environment. She writes:

“Growing up in socialist Bulgaria taught me survival rules: ✖️ Never question authority. ✖️ Keep your head down. ✖️ Don’t ask questions.”

Upon joining Raiffeisenbank, Filipova realized these ingrained behaviors were a significant impediment. The environment demanded engagement and visibility, starkly contrasting with her previous experiences. She describes the intense physical anxiety she felt before meetings:

“The physical response was real: → Heart pounding before every meeting → Rehearsing questions that never left my lips → Watching others get praised for saying what I was thinking”

The Shift from Invisibility to Engagement

Filipova highlights the critical moment when her boss directly addressed her reticence, encouraging her to share her opinions. This external validation was a catalyst for change. As Ani Filipova notes, her boss asked, “Ani, I know you have opinions. Why don’t you share them?” This encouragement, she explains, empowered her to start speaking, gradually building confidence over time.

The business leader emphasizes that silence in a professional context directly translates to a lack of visibility, which in turn limits opportunities and hinders growth. This principle, she argues, applies to both corporate employees and entrepreneurs.

The Power of Asking ‘Dangerous’ Questions

A central theme in Filipova’s post is the transformative power of questions. What were once perceived as “dangerous” or disruptive in her early life, she now views as a “superpower.” According to Ani Filipova, the courage to articulate what others might be thinking but are afraid to say is what makes an individual memorable and influential.

“Because the person brave enough to ask what everyone’s thinking? That’s who people remember. That’s who gets promoted. That’s who builds influence.”

Filipova concludes by offering a path for others to find their voice more rapidly than her own five-year journey. She suggests that actively practicing vocal participation in meetings and discussions can accelerate this process, ultimately unlocking career potential.
