In a recent LinkedIn post, entrepreneur Gary Vaynerchuk challenges conventional hiring practices, suggesting that traditional methods like scrutinizing resumes and calling references are largely ineffective. Vaynerchuk asserts that the hiring process is fundamentally a gamble, heavily reliant on intuition and honest communication.

Rethinking Resume Reviews and References

Vaynerchuk openly questions the value of resumes and reference checks, implying they offer little genuine insight into a candidate’s true capabilities. He humorously points out the inherent bias in reference calls, where individuals often provide overly positive, albeit inaccurate, feedback.

“I don’t think I’ve looked at a f*cking resume in 20 years .. or a reference?! Are you really gonna call someone that they told you to call?”

He further elaborates on the disingenuous nature of reference checks:

“And if someone calls me for a reference, I’m like, ‘They’re the best!’ It’s wrong… but I do it. And you all know it .. so why the f*ck are you still calling anybody for a reference?”

According to Vaynerchuk, these practices are outdated and do not accurately predict a candidate’s performance within an organization. He suggests that the time and effort spent on these traditional methods could be better allocated elsewhere.

Hiring as an Intuitive Guess

The core of Vaynerchuk’s argument centers on the idea that hiring is, at its heart, an act of informed guessing. He believes that a leader’s intuition plays a crucial role in assessing potential hires.

“I always say this: Hiring is guessing.”

Vaynerchuk advocates for developing and trusting this intuition, suggesting it’s a more reliable indicator than superficial credentials or potentially misleading recommendations. This approach, he implies, allows for a more authentic assessment of a candidate’s fit for a role and company culture.

The Power of Transparency in Interviews

Beyond intuition, Vaynerchuk stresses the importance of radical transparency during the interview process. He believes that setting clear expectations from the outset significantly reduces the likelihood of disappointment or a mismatch once a candidate is hired.

“You go on your intuition, you ask very specific questions .. and something I do well now is I tell those interviewees the real truth of what I’m looking for … so that when they get two weeks in, there are no surprises,” Vaynerchuk explains. He emphasizes that honesty about the role’s demands and the company’s environment helps ensure that new hires are not only capable but also aligned with the reality of the job.

In his view, this candid approach not only benefits the hiring manager by reducing turnover and improving retention but also empowers the candidate to make a more informed decision about their career path. Vaynerchuk concludes by inviting dialogue, asking for others’ best hiring advice to foster collective learning within the business community.
