In a recent LinkedIn post, Linas Beliūnas highlights Google’s new “Personal intelligence” as a potentially insurmountable advantage in the AI race, suggesting it represents the deepest personalization layer ever built. Beliūnas argues that while many AI companies are focused on adding basic memory functions, Google’s approach leverages two decades of user data in a fundamentally different and more powerful way.

The Deep Integration of Personal Data

Beliūnas explains that Google’s Gemini model can reason across a user’s entire digital history, including emails, photos, search queries, and YouTube watch patterns. This is not based on uploaded data or simple prompts, but on the user’s “real-life context.” He illustrates this with practical examples:

“Forgot your car model? Gemini finds it in an old email and recommends tires. Planning a trip? Gemini cross-references your calendar, photos, and interests – then suggests places you’ll actually like.”

This, according to Beliūnas, signifies a shift from merely “smarter AI” to “more relevant AI.” He emphasizes that this level of personalization is built upon what he terms “data gravity,” a concept where a company’s existing vast dataset attracts more data and user engagement.

Google’s Unique Data Advantage

The core of Beliūnas’s argument is that Google’s extensive, first-party, and integrated data provides a unique competitive edge that other AI players cannot easily replicate. He contrasts Google’s capabilities with those of its competitors:

  • OpenAI cannot access user Gmail accounts.
  • Anthropic cannot view user photo libraries.
  • Perplexity’s knowledge is limited to interactions within its own application.

As Linas Beliūnas puts it:

“They start every conversation from zero. Google starts from you.”

This fundamental difference, Beliūnas argues, changes the dynamics of the AI race. While AI models themselves may be converging in capability, the ability to leverage deeply integrated, user-specific data pipelines remains a significant differentiator.

The New Battleground: User Understanding

Beliūnas posits that the future of AI competition lies in understanding the user best, an area where Google has been building an advantage since approximately 2005. He elaborates on the scale of this advantage:

“A decade of emails → Trillions of photos → Billions of searches → Behavioral signals at planetary scale”

This vast repository of “first-party. All opt-in. All deeply integrated” data, Beliūnas concludes, creates an “AI moat nobody can replicate.” In his view, this strategic positioning is more critical than the convergence of AI models, as it allows Google to offer a uniquely personalized and relevant user experience.

Beliūnas’s analysis suggests that while the AI landscape is rapidly evolving, Google’s long-term investment in user data integration gives it a distinct and potentially lasting advantage over competitors who lack similar access to comprehensive, first-party user context.
