In a recent LinkedIn post, entrepreneur and former doctor Ali Abdaal highlights a transformative exercise that prompted his decision to leave medicine and pursue a full-time career in content creation. The exercise, known as the Odyssey Plan, originates from the book “Designing Your Life” by Stanford professors Bill Burnett and Dave Evans.
Abdaal explains that the Odyssey Plan involves envisioning three distinct versions of one’s life five years into the future. This structured reflection aims to uncover potential paths and challenge conventional thinking about career trajectories.
“This 30-minute Stanford exercise can change your life. It prompted me to quit medicine and make YouTube videos full-time.”
The Three Paths of the Odyssey Plan
According to Abdaal, the exercise is divided into three critical scenarios:
1. The Current Path
This scenario asks individuals to realistically map out their life if they continue on their present course. Abdaal shared his personal reflection on this aspect:
“When I wrote out my current path – continuing as a part-time trainee in anaesthetics and supervising physiology – I had this feeling of “Is this really it?””
This step is designed to foster an honest assessment of one’s current situation and future prospects within existing constraints.
2. The Alternative Path
Here, the focus shifts to exploring a significant change in direction. Abdaal suggests considering questions like:
- What would you do if you were suddenly unable to continue your current work?
- What transferable skills do you possess that could be applied to different fields?
- What alternative careers have sparked your curiosity?
3. The Radical Path
This is the most unconstrained scenario, where financial and social obligations are disregarded. Abdaal prompts readers to consider:
- How would you spend your time if financial worries were eliminated?
- What would you pursue if the fear of failure was absent?
- What would you undertake if external opinions held no sway?
Challenging the Status Quo
Abdaal recounts using this exercise in 2019 while grappling with his career as a doctor. He found that the ‘Radical Path’ scenario consistently pointed towards his interest in creating YouTube content, especially when he removed the barriers of societal expectations and financial concerns.
As Abdaal notes, the core benefit of the Odyssey Plan is its ability to provide mental space for unconventional thinking:
“What I’ve found is that this exercise gives you permission to break out of the box and think more freely.”
He emphasizes that individuals often feel confined to their current trajectory, even when internal dissatisfaction exists. The exercise, however, aims to reveal the broader spectrum of possibilities available.
Facilitating Future Planning
Abdaal is hosting a free live event designed to help others navigate similar career crossroads. The two-day event will feature speakers focused on reflecting on the past, planning for the future, and establishing systems for sustained action. This initiative underscores his belief in the power of structured reflection and proactive planning for personal and professional growth.
