In a recent LinkedIn post, Ani Filipova discusses how Simon Sinek’s career shift illustrates the potential value of experience built in one profession. Filipova’s post traces Sinek’s move from marketing consultancy toward the work that led to his “Start With Why” framework, using the story to make a broader case for finding new ways to earn from existing expertise.
“Just because you’re successful at something doesn’t mean you have to keep doing it.”
From marketing model to wider platform
Filipova recounts that Sinek had clients and years of marketing experience, but by late 2005 was unhappy with his work and struggled to see a positive future. In her telling, he began examining why people make decisions. What started as a marketing model developed into the idea of “WHY,” which he shared with others.
According to Filipova, interest in that thinking brought speaking invitations. She says Sinek had given one public speech in the preceding three and a half years, then began receiving 30 to 40 invitations annually. Filipova also points to 2009, when he published Start With Why and delivered a TEDx talk that reached millions.
“He didn’t throw away his years of marketing experience. He found a completely different way to use it.”
The distinction is central to Filipova’s argument: a career change need not mean discarding the skills accumulated in an earlier role. She presents Sinek’s experience as a foundation that could be applied in a different format and to a wider audience.
Recognizing what experience can offer
Filipova extends the example to people considering work beyond their current job. She suggests that accumulated expertise might support a business, advisory work, speaking or another source of income. Her post emphasizes two steps: identifying what knowledge a person can offer and understanding what others may be willing to pay for it.
“But first, you need to recognise its value. And understand what others would pay for.”
From insight to instruction
The post also serves as an invitation to Filipova’s free, 90-minute live masterclass, titled “How to turn 10, 15 or 20+ years of experience into income beyond your job.” Filipova says the session will cover uncovering expertise, identifying marketable knowledge and beginning to build income beyond a salary.
By connecting Sinek’s trajectory with that offer, Filipova frames career reinvention as a process of reinterpreting prior experience. Her post does not suggest that every professional can replicate Sinek’s public profile; rather, it uses his story to illustrate how a different application of established skills may open new professional possibilities.
